Default 2nd gear start?

Ok so the other night me and a friend are driving and I pull up to a stop light and I'm sitting there waiting in 1st gear and he reaches over and puts it in 2nd. I was like hell no! Don't touch the shifter if you ain't driving or if your shifting for me. I put it in 1st and precede to go on green. He says first is for burnouts and 2nd is just the way you should start. I precede to say that 2nd would just require more clutch slipping and am going to keep starting in 1st. Just wanted to see what you guys thought and what you guys do.

Thanks
AR

On a downwards slope I'll start out in second, otherwise I take off from first gear.

And anybody who starts messing around with the controls of a car he is riding in, without asking first, needs to be slapped upside the head.

I would have bitch slapped his *** and told him to keep his hands on his lap. It ain't okay to touch my shifter unless I say it's okay.

And by the way, don't wait in gear. Leave it in neutral.

yeah he sounds like a dumbass to me you're suppose to go through gears in numerical order. 2nd gear can be used for burnouts, but i start in first gear for that too.

After he stopped crying from getting bitch slapped I would have explained not to touch anything and when he gets a car he start in whatever gear he wants.

I know this thread applies to 6spds. But what about some A4 cars what were equipped with SGS? Second Gear Starts? It was a traction device, I guess it still counts as a second gear start.

Portsmouth huh. I grew up in New Boston

As for the second gear start on the A4s, I would only use it for low traction situations like stated

when i had 4.11s in my M6, i started my burnouts at the track in 2nd gear so the tires could heat up faster. but wouldnt even think of trying to launch in 2nd gear.

Where did you come up with that? You change gears for a reason.

Your buddy is a tool.....period.

If you had 4.10 gears then 2nd gear is the best gear for a burnout. 1st gear with 4.10's will not spin your tires fast enough.

2nd gear start would burn up your clutch more than needed. If you wanna save your clutch/gas start in 1st and go to 4th like the skip shift does. You'd save a gear even if you started in 2nd to 3rd then to 4th vs 1st to 4th.

Peace,
Craig.

ya if anybody touches anything while riding in my car i slap there hand down, i would say just start in 1st no need to wear the clutch faster, i shift from 1st to 3rd and 2nd to 4th sometimes so i dont have to row through all 6 gears

Dude, your avatar wins this thread.

On topic, smack your friend. If the friend is a guy, smack him twice. Everyone knows you don't mess with anything like that unless you are the driver, especially guys.

Hell yes on the AVATAR! Anyhow I gave the guy a talk about the clutch slipping and buring it up faster and what not but he brushed it off. The worst part was he said "Dude I always started in 2nd in my prom car so I wouldn't have to shift right away." He had a RSX type S. I thought to my self does this look or sound like a mother freaking ricer but I was nice and just smiled and kept starting in 1st. He will learn.
