Default header install

hey guys, no, no stupid noob questions in this thread...yet. just wanted to mention that i started my LT/ORY install last night and things are moving well, even if it is slow. i was only able to work on it for about 3.5 hours last night, but i removed the Y and both cats. the factory headers should come off today and thank god for PB BLASTER!!! that stuff is awesome. i went with hooker LTs (ceramic coated) and hooker ORY. i searched this site MANY, MANY times before purchasing the combo and have been able to read A LOT of useful info and tips regarding the installation of the parts. thanks to all who have posted info regarding "how to install", that search button helped me find it all.

every garage i work in (my own, my friends, etc) ends up with a can of pb blaster.
headers really wake up the car - remember it will be worth it.

also.. if jacking up the motor for clearance... do not forget to unbolt engine AND tranny mounts - they tear.

The night before I started my teardown I sprayed everything with Liquid Wrench. The next day I was able to get the stock y-pipe off in less than an hour alone on Rhino Ramps.

As for the exhaust manifolds, get a breaker bar or a long cheater pipe and just give em all you got. The weak part is the stud and if it breaks, that's less ratcheting you have to do! I used an extra DirecTV satellite dish mast over my 3/8 ratchet - voila!

(I'm talking about the trio of exhaust manifold-to-cat bolts, not the bolts in the head!!)

yes, i did just jack the car up in my garage. i got 4 jackstands and jacked the car up about 18 inches off the ground and both headers slid right in. i would be lying if i didnt tell you that there was a lot of sweating, cussing, and some bloody knuckles...haha but SO MANY of the more experienced people on this site had suggested that newbs try the install that i thought, what the hell...my SS is my weekend car so if it took me a little longer to install, its not like i had to drive it anyways. with a friend and some directions to follow, this is a very do-able project for newbs. i will try and post some pics up and maybe even a sound clip this weekend...if my redneck *** can figure out how!!!

Hey boss, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and go get some studs at any hardware store that are the same thread count and size as header bolts, say about 2 inches long...

Get 2 of them, one for the very front hole in the head and one for the very back hole in the head where the header bolt threads into...

What these studs will allow you to do is hang the gaskets and headers in position while you start other bolts...it REALLY make its easy man, you can do it by yourself. Otherwise, you are in for a shitty time trying to hold up the headers and thread the bolts, specially on that PS head!!

Just sharing some wisdom,
Erik
