Question Why do I get such shitty gas mileage?!?!?

Hey all I just purchased a 00 SS 3 weeks ago.. and this first full tank I got 233 miles on it, mostly conservative driving, with occasional get on it.. Now I just filled my tank up all the way past full and am down to 3/4 with only 45 miles.. what's the deal here? I just installed a LS1 Whisper lid not to long ago as well. Doesn't this help with gas????

Please list any suggestions you may have for me to increase gas mpg. The car has 61350 miles on it. Should I take it to get all the fluids changed, new wires, plugs, anything like that??? This car is completely stock, no cam or heads or intake or anything like that, just an airlid. The average I have read is 285 miles city, and 420 miles highway driving. How the hell am I so low???? Please help!

The only thing I can suggest is a tune up. Plugs, fuel filter, seafoam, air filter. Also check tire pressure, that can affect it too.

If you have a place to work on it, do it yourself, its all pretty straightforward.

I hope that your using unleaded super gasoline, first of all.Do you know who had the car before you?? If so get some info on it, if it was ever tuned, fluids, tires etc... If not I'd Seafoam it, fuel filter and oil change, then go from there... Semper FI!! $.02

You haven't given us a real good idea of what your actual MPG is. "a tank" is different for different people. How many gallons do you put in on average at a fill up? If you are getting 233mpt and putting in 14 gal at a fillup, yeah that's really bad MPG. But if you are only putting in 10mpg at a fillup (meaning you fill up sooner than you need), that's pretty good MPG.

I rarely put in a full tank these days, but I used to fill up at about 250 miles on a tank, and I regularly put in about 13-13.5 gal at each fill up. I averaged 19-20mpg, and that was all city driving.

I put over 14gallons in at fill up time.. The owner before me didn't do a single mod to this car. I found cob webs in the engine bay lol! I plan on doing seafoam come this next oil change, because it just had one before I got it (mobil 1 synthetic 10w30). I get 93 octane at gas time as well. It has brand new tires on it, Dunlop Sport 5000s, less than 500 miles on them. The air filter is K&N and is in clean condition right now.

I probably start up/shut off the car on an average of 5-6 times a day, drive to and from work which is 3 miles round trip lol at 25mph.

Before taking it anywhere do what Super Fro suggested. Last spring when I put my car up I was averaging about 260 miles to the tank just under the quarter mark. When I got it out in the spring I was lucky to get 120. Run some seafoam through the gas tank, when that tank is gone, change your fuel filter, then do you seafoam through the top end, then change your plugs/wires. That should restore some power and fuel economy.

sounds good, thanks guys, I will head to autozone tomorrow and pick up some seafoam, and hopefully deep creep if they have it too

Keep your foot out of it!!!!

I've just been putting in about 10 dollars per fill up.. Which for 93 around here is roughly $300-310 and haven't been getting great mileage because it's all stop and go... I like to give her a little bit every now and then also..

I've got a couple bolt ons, but no cams or anything and I'm probably getting 10-15mpg.. Last time it was right on the 10 mark.. what can I say, just need to have some fun sometimes

300miles in mixed driving should be about right, 425+ miles on a tank for highway is about right.

These aren't civics... nor hybrids. On a 16 gallon tank to get 400miles isn't that bad.

An m6 can squeeze out 450miles all highway. I was getting 19-22mpg mixed pre cam. Now I get around 16mpg and up to 27 mpg on highway post cam.

Seafoam it, change plugs, (wires if necessary), all fluids, then do a proper test. Fill tank, reset trip meter, note what kind of driving 30% highway, 70% city etc then on next fill up mark down mileage vs total amount to fill tank. do the math, got mileage.

Track this over a few fill ups to get a really good idea of how your mileage is.

I run and ms4 cam with a m6, and in town I am averaging about 13mpg and on the highway just a cunthair over 26mpg. I feel your pain brudda. Although I do give mine about 10 to 15 minutes warm up time in the mornings and evenings before I drive it so that could be a lot of it.

I have NO idea how many miles I can get on a full tank because I never let either of my f-bodys run close to E. If you consistantly run your car to empty you will be buying a new fuel pump, the gas in your tank cools the pump.

I get 16 mpg stop & go driving in my 99 A4 and that's driving it like a grandma. If I stomp on it, I can watch the gas gauge go down and I can forget about getting decent mileage. My Z28 is bone stock and I never expected good mileage from a V8 muscle car. These cars are all about fun, not economy. Enjoy them while you can, because V8 muscle is on the endangered species list.
