Default Why buy a WS6 over regular T/A?

Okay, this is my newbie question, but I am a newbie, so I'm entitled. I've been looking at 98-02 trans ams for two years and I've noticed the WS6 version usually sells for 2-3k more than the non-WS6. Seems like a high price to pay for an extra 20-25 HP. Yes, the hood looks kick ***, but you can buy one for $400-$700. Still much cheaper. And I think it comes with better exhaust, but don't most people replace that anyhow? Why pay so much more for a WS6?

there is zero power diff in a ws6 from a trans am. dont let a dealer or who ever tell you different, ws6 package is basicly a ram air hood. buy a trans am if thats what you want, after market hoods are available.

no real reason other than looks and a lil bit better performance, i think the ws6 might have a lil bit better suspension but not 100% sure

That's what I was afraid of, little or no power difference. And speaking strickly of the cost of horsepower, 2-3 grand in aftermarket parts would get you more power than the WS6. But I'm curious why so many others sprung for the WS6. Is there something else that makes it so much better? The embroidered seats, perhaps? Just kidding, but really.

i have a ws6, the hood does it for me, it makes the car whole. no offence to anybody but the trans am hood just looks plain to me.2-3 grand in parts(h/c, headers would get you close to 370-400 horse or more with right combo.)

It looks kick ***. And the stock hood fits better than mine. People who are ignorant buy them thinking they are faster. People who aren't just like them.

Yes, I suppose those WS6 wheels are worth the extra cost to some. And not having to say it's a clone. Not me. No offense to the WS6 owners on here. I pay extra for the Dr Pepper that says Dr Pepper and not Dr Thunder.

But what's the point of being able to sell a car for say, $1,000 more in 10 years if you paid $3,000 more this year?

I like the looks of the WS6 over the T/A and that is why I bought it. Plus it's a limited production car, but really not a collectors item unless you have an anniversary edition.

the same reason people buy the SS over the Z28!
the ws6 has the hood, suspension, and resale value. But if your gonna mod the f*** out of it then just get the regular TA and spend the axtra money on a good hood and H/C

Ultimately it doesn't really matter, I went from an SS to a Z28. I'd rather have an SS or a WS6 for some reason though, that's just how I am. Personal preference I guess.

Looks.

If you really like the look, the 2-3k might be worth it. You figure 700 for the hood, another few hundred for paint, and you can *hope* the new paint matches the 6 years + old factory paint.

The wheels will run you about 400 for a set, and then another $500 for 17" tires for them.

So that's about 2 grand right there for the wheels and hood.

Plus the WS6 comes with different swaybars, although I've seen them on Ebay for 50 bucks, so that's not such a big deal.

I'm skeptical of any real future collector value to these cars, but you never know. The Barrett-Jackson auctions prove that alot of people have more money that brains.

Yeah, I thought the "WS6" code was the code for the suspension package? Nothing to do with power...

So why did I get mine? It had less then 50,000 km's, was in great condition, was in my price range, and already had mods I was looking at on it. I had started looking for a firebird, but once I saw the one I have now, I had to have it. No matter what you get, it has an ls1 under the hood, it will haul ***.

Good reasoning right there.

If I had found a comparable WS6 before I found my Formy, I would have went with it. I actually really wanted a WS6 Formula, but those are rare as hens teeth.

And yeah, in the past WS6 always meant suspension and brake upgrades. I had a 2nd gen WS6, it had 4 wheel disks and huge swaybars, a big deal for a 1980 car. Same thing with the 3rd gens, WS6 got you rear disks, big swaybars, and an aluminum driveshaft. I had an '88GTA w/WS6, that thing handled awesome, better than the 4th gens, I'd wager.

It wasn't till the 4th gens that the Ram Air came out and you got a little extra power.
