Default What does egr/air do?

I have been reading about guys with 98 99 and some 00s that are deleting these systems. What do you gain by doing this and what exactly do these systems do? Just curious...

Thanks

egr. Exhaust gas recirculation. IS emissions stuff. There are no performance benifits to this system. Advantages of removing it is that the system takes up a lot of space under the hood (i.e. cleaner looking engine bay), and it weights about 10-15#s (i believe, might wanna check the weight reduction sticky in drag forum). I deleted mine.

I'll give you 1/2 of what you asked, you need to search for the other. It took me .5sec to find this:

With hot *** exhaust air straight from the #2 primary? lmao MORE fresh air from outside via air induction without the EGR tube blocking it FTW.
EGR is part of SMOG restrictions, is not helping the motor at all.

Peace,
Craig.

EGR is kind of like turbo: it recycles gasses. You wouldn't get rid of a turbo would you?

As far as I know AIR pumps fresh air into the exhaust so that the cats work better. GM did it so it would be easier to pass emissions. Don't quote me on that though. It's basically useless **** that takes up space.

i beleive all cars have an AIR pump, not jsut GM cars. it pumps fresh air into the cats to get them to operating temp quicker. it only run for the first minute or so of run time.

Well whatever the case be, it's still pointless and space-consuming.

meh, not really. if you get rid of your cats it is, but if you plan to keep them, keep the AIR system. it will help your cats last longer.

Z Fury: Here is the thing you gave me a sticky for a third gen vechicle. I have know need to look in there so i never saw it.

Also isn't the point of a forum to post a question and get an answer not to have someone tell you to do a search, if I wanted that I would use google. If your to lazy to answer the question and tell someone to search then just don't post. I get tired of people telling others to do a search. Just answer the question for the person.

Chill guy. It wasn't for a third gen vehicle it was for a third gen motor. (Your car has a Gen III engine.) Read the sticky and quit dickin.
