Default f-body ls1 vs. corvette ls1 vs. ls6

what is the difference between the f-body ls1 and the corvette ls1. Also is the only difference between the corvette ls1 and the ls6 the valves? i'm planning on finding a wrecked f-body or corvette for under 5000 to use a lot of the drivetrain in a 240z. It will have the weight of a japanese car and the power of chevy. It'll run 12s.

12s? More like 11s if you put good tires on the 240Z.

Corvette vs F-body LS1:
-exact same heads
-exact same block
-exact same crank/rods/pistons
-exact same intake manifold
-slightly different cam specs (negligible)
-different shaped oil pan
-different serpentine belt pulley layout

Corvette LS1 vs LS6:
-different head castings (LS6 flow slightly better stock)
-different intake manifolds prior to 2001 Corvettes. All 2001 and newer Corvettes and F-body LS1s have the LS6 intake.
-different cam specs (02-03 LS6 cam is much better than 01 or regular C5)
-different PCV system
-slightly different block internals (crankcase port windows larger on LS6)
-same crank and rods, I believe pistons are a bit different

I hope your right about the 11's but since a stock camaro weighs about 3400 and runs mid 13's if you use 100lbs equals one tenth in the quarter I am estimating that a 2000 lb z will be in the mid to low twelves with some good rubber wrapped around some 17 x 8 wheels. But back to the original question. Are you saying that pulleys are the only difference in the f-body ls1 vs vette ls1. I am leaning toward a camaro because i have found a couple with bent frames and destroyed bodies that have perfect drivetrains for around 5000. I am thinking my best bet is the f-body set up with a bad *** cam. I think the ls1/ t56 setup in a z should at least if nothing else a lot of fun. If you have any other ideas for a z i would love to here them. I am only 15 so i have till next april to get it running.

Yep, basically the pulley layout and the oil pan shape. Corvettes have a flat oil pan with "wings" on the side, which don't really fit in any other vehicles very well.

There are quite a few bolt-on LS1s running mid-high 11s with no internal engine modifications, all in the 3100-3200 lb range. 2000 lbs is way light!

The location of the alternator is different which is what I think Tony means by pulley layout. F-body alt. sits driverside, opposit the a/c compressor. Vette alt. sits driverside topside. Also, the crank pulley are slightly different.

Sounds like you've got the makings of a pretty basass little ride.

Yep ... good headers, full exaust, full intake, ls6 intake, asp pulleys, clutch or TC, gears, DR's, etc ... would throw an LS1 into the high 11's.

I'm no expert here, but LS6's have magnesium valves too to reduce reciprocating weight correct? Tony you'd probably know if that's true or not. I'm pretty sure it is.

I think the LS6 valves are hollow stainless steel and the exhaust valve is sodium filled for cooling (valve stem pics http://www.idavette.net/hib/02ls6/photos/43106b.jpg). Here two versions of the same article about the LS6 development from a GM engineer.

Enjoy....

Magnesium Valves?!!! Since magnesium is flammable ( i.e. magnesium flares), I don't think so. Wheels, suspension, etc., maybe. Engine parts (at least around the combustion chamber), No!!

My 2001 Corvette with just Vararam Intake, Corsa Pace Car Exhaust, TPIS Headers, Pulleys, on street tires runs mid 12's so im sure you can do alot better with a 2000lb car.

Corvette LS1 has throttle by wire. F-body LS1 does not.
