HELP: 1998 Camaro Z28 B4C
I am looking at buying the following:
1998 Camaro Z28 5.7L V8
B4C package
3.73 gears (4 speed automatic)
New oil, water, and fuel pumps
167,000 miles
This use to be a police cruiser and has 167k miles on it. How much longer do you think this engine is going to last before I will have to drop a new one into it?

It is on it's second owner after being police auctioned off. The first owner had it for 1 month but had to get rid of it due to buying it without wifes approval. The current owner is the second one.
If the engine blows I am putting a LS2 or Small Block into it. Hopefully the engine and the tranny don't go at the same time or I will be in for some big bucks because once the tranny goes going to put in a upgraded tranny. To think about it, where am I going to get all this money haha.

Law enforcement vehicles in general have some of the best maintenance programs I have ever seen. They don't take them to Jiffy Lube and all that, the city/county in which the car patrols in is taken care of by the city/county itself.
Also, the car has been prepared for the "abuse" that it may or may not have undergone during its duration of service.
I would recommend looking at it as you should look through any other car... with a fine-toothed comb. Check it for blow by, check all the gaps on the car and make sure the car hasn't been taken apart, make sure the A/C blows cold, make sure the interior is in fine shape, and more importantly, check the trunk. A lot of B4C's will have a gun lockbox bolted in back there. Make sure there's no gun in it when you buy the car

I highly doubt the current owner paid anywhere near that. It's just not worth it. WHen you decide what to offer, just remember you WILL have to spend money to rebuild the engine and tranny soon. And that's if you don't mod it and just drive it as is. If you plan on modding it, you might as well rebuild it first and save the expense of it blowing up later.

I had my 98 B4C until about 9 months ago. It was over 198,000 miles, and I decided it was time to sell it, even though it was still running strong. (also having a 99 C5 FRC made the decision to part with it easier) Many ls1's have run strong with tons of miles on them.
But like others have said, that's probably a little bit too much money.

It still has some lef in it but you better get it for cheap, meaning <4000$
Id rather have a 98-02 with 70-100,000 on it for 6000, than a 98 with 170,000 on it for 5000.
Save for a month or two and grab something that will last...
OR throw 4000 worth of 100$ bills in his lap and make him turn it down....

Id have to disagree with the first comment about best maintenance....my parents both have government jobs with police and my dad is the fire cheif of my town and i know the mechanic they use for both police and fire vehicles. The mechanic has a local shop and basically is the mechanic you go to for an oil change for your DD. I took my T/A there once and would never take it back, the guys a dumbass. I wanted to swap the SLP resonator with the borla muffler and when he put my car on the lift he didnt know that the rear hangs and the exhaust shifts towards the driveshaft. He said he couldnt change the muffler because it was already touching the driveshaft haha..after he said that i just told him forget it took it down the street and had it installed no problems...so as far as police having great maintenance it all depends on the station...one thing for sure is that ALL policeman beat on their police cars...just save your money and get something you will really like for a better price

I owned a 99 B4C. It was a great car. Since these cars are owned by state gov they are usually well taken care of. Mine had 126,xxx on it when i sold it. It was purchased by a sponsor here Harrisspeedworks. Since i sold it more than a year ago it has been hit with a 150 shot of NOS more times than you would believe and its still going strong! I paid $5500 for my 99 more than a year and a half ago with only 118k on the clock. It was in good shape. I say $4600 should be your limit. A pic of my old B4C is below. Good Luck
