Default Cam selection MS4 or Trex..newb

Friend has a 2000 Trans Am with Hooker longtubes, custom y and catback. Had 4.10's but took them out for stock 3.42's. My or his question is what cam should he go with? He has a cam now(not sure of the specs) but it isn't that big. He's already changed the valvesprings so he wants the biggest cam he can get without flycutting the pistons. Are their better choices than the MS4 or TRex? His goals are low 12's high 11's and adding spray ini the future.

He has a lot of research to do... There is a lot more than just sliding in a "big cam."

I couldnt have said it any better. Those times are not hard to get to but he needs to consider the cars uses. Some on here daily drive MS4 cars and some say they are too big for a DD.IMO you dont need it if he is only looking for high 11s. If I were him I would contact PatrickG. He is a member on here and can be found under that name if you search it. In his sig he has a link for a custom cam sheet. Your buddy will pay $25 and have to fill out this sheet and Patrick will spec a cam just for your friends liking and goals. I went this route and have not yet gotten the cam but it only costs about $30 extra than buying an off the shelf cam and you also get the advice of an expert like PatrickG.

Also if he is an auto he should be thinking about a higher stall converter at the same time as the cam.

With any cam that large, he's going to need to check the PTV clearance regardless of what the mfg says. Whether or not he'll actually have to is up for debate, but it's always a great idea to check with a cam like those.

He should really start reading up on cams. With a cam like that, also, he is probably going to want to swap back in some steeper gears than those 3.42s.

For sure if he goes with the MS4 he is going to have to put at least a 4.10 back in it. Those cams love RPMs. He is also going to be wanting a clutch for sure.

Default agree with pewter

both of these cams pretty much require a big stall converter (A4) or steep gears (M6), especially the TREX...the MS4 just sounds wicked and makes ridiculous numbers on cam swap alone. just my .02.

ms4 cam only doesnt make that much power for such a big cam. ive seen some make as little as 389-39xwhp, much smaller cams make the same. trex makes like 400-430 cam only

My cam only TRex runs 11.9's on the stock heads, intake, tb, has 4.30 gears and a good clutch. Mileager isn't bad either driving 150 miles each way and racing all day average is 15.3 mpg.

Alot more needs to be done in order to get the most out of a big cam like that. He'll also need at least and ls6 intake to take advantage of the higher power band. He'll have to go back to a MINIMUM of 4.10 gears. I'm one of the cars that "only" made 390 hp on an MS4. But that was through an unlocked and HORRIBLY inefficient converter. I've ran 12.0@114 mph on street tires and stock gears w/ 1.8 60' time at full weight (and I weigh about 300lbs, lol). I'll be swapping to a bigger converter here shortly (yank pt4400) and since that run I've added DR's, subframe connectors, and 3.73 gears.

He really needs to know what else he wants to do to the car. A big cam will definately outperform a smaller cam, but ONLY when it has the correct supporting mods to go with it. If he ONLY wants to change his cam right now, he'd be better off with something smaller.
