My friend put a more performance lt4 in his car and he gave me his ported and polished maf ends with the screen removed. I have a 98 t/a and i have heard mixed thoughts about this mod. Can this modification harm my car?

It can cause you to run lean. If it runs too lean it can cause detonation, in which you'll get knock retard, which pulls timing thus affecting hp.

But... From what I've observed, it seems that '98s are more accepting of this mod. I suppose due to the larger injectors on the '98s. Try them out and see. You can always put your stock ones back on.

awesome thanks. How will i know if it is detonating? what does it sound like

I personally think its sort of a "crackling" sound. When you go wide open throttle (WOT), usually in the upper RPM range, and you hear the engine pinging/crackling, that is detonation. Thats the best way I can think to describe what it sounds like.

I'm a bit leery of putting this on an A4 car.

I have read a few times that it will screw up the line pressure of the transmission.

Neil I would not do it,it made my car run really rich,and right after i did the mod my 3rd and 4th clutches went out mysteriously,lol. I did put the stocker back on and it runs stout.

Good advice on not doing this mod. After doing this mod, my trans mysteriously began to slip and eventually failed (the car was stock save for a lid and the MAF de-screening and porting).

i did this on mine, and after the 3rd pass, it started pinging in 2nd gear. Added a MAFT and dialed-in 8% richer on WOT and no more pinging For what it's worth, it made my Formula about .15 quicker in the 1/4 mile.
