Default Better gas mileage with V8???

I recently got my TA after driving my v6 bird for about year. and call me crazy but i swear i'm getting better gas mileage with the V8!!. both cars are '99 A4 all stock. the v6 has 3.08's and my TA has 3.23's. how can this be? i think it has to do with the fact that in the v6 it revs up alot higher. when i drive my v6 i frequently get up to 3-4k rpm. when i drive my TA i barely get above 2k rpm. i guess i'm used to a certain power level from the v6 so i don't feel a need to punch the TA as hard. any thoughts?

I dont think your crazy. And your in the ball park as to the "why its happening". I actually get similiar mpg compared to the wifes ride-03 grand prix. It's heavier with a smaller enginge to push it with. Pisses her off!

The LS1 efficiency is fairly high. Remember to move x weight still requires x energy to move it. If both the cars were similar in weight, then regardless of the powerplant, the same amount of energy would be used.

On that note, I have a 4 banger accord that gets the same highway mileage as my camaro. It's almost 3300 lbs and my camaro is about 3450 lbs. I have a friend with a 05 Jeep TJ. He also gets similar mileage on highway despite being a 4 banger. There are other aspects to mileage other than the v8. Aerodynamics, drivetrain efficiency, engine efficiency all play a large role in the fuel consumption.

I am at 480 hp and getting 18 mpg city and 28+ mpg highway and thats with a M6 and 3.42's. A4'so not fair as well! it isthe 5th and 6th gears that make the difference. The 18 mpg in the city is me being somewhat "gentle" driving. Can't cruise in town in 6th gear below 45 mph or it could stall. I had a 94 Z with a M6 and LT1 and it got the same mpg. Not to bad for a highpower V8

V8s don't have to work as hard to move the same weight as a V6. Therefore you are right, if you can keep your foot out of it you can get better mileage than a V6.

You're driving habits will factor heavily into your mpg too.

i had a 4 banger mustang and my friend had a suped up 5.0. both 5 speeds and he got better fuel economy than mine.

if the engine doesnt have to work as hard its not going to be so thirsty

Agreed with what the others are saying. One of my co-workers drives an '01 ford ranger 4x4 with a 200hp 4.0 V6 with an auto trans.....he gets 14mpg. My '85 swb has a 450hp 383 stroker with no overdrive and I get 15mpg. He hates me.

My sister has a 98 Camaro 6 banger( she just couldnt stand to not have a camaro after I bought mine), and gets around 20mpg highway. I dont bitch about gas because for 300+ rwhp cars ours do damn good on gas mileage. I get around 28mpg.

I've owned both - the wife's 5-spd '98 stripper, and my 6-speed Z. Around town, the V-6 got 18-20 versus 16-17 for the Z. Highway only trip the best I've done with the Z is just over 29 mpg. I've gotten as much as 33 MPG with the V-6, but it usually ran about 30 on trips. On average, the V-6 was about 4 MPG better on the highway.

I think the auto tranny costs the V-6 more in terms of mileage.

I have a little bit of everything Fbody wise. My 95 V6 A4 gets almost the exact same fuel economy as my 98 M6 Formula did with a leaky fuel injector. If I didn't have that injector leaking I guarantee it would have gotten a lot better fuel economy. I haven't gotten any fuel economy records on my LT1 A4 car yet.

my fiance's 2003 mustang v-6 gets a little worse than my car does. takes her half a tank to drive 67 miles (or so she claims) i can get there on under a 1/4 tank.
