Default dash lights and tripometer resetting randomly...

Everytime I start my car, and even sometimes when I'm driving, all of my dash lights will come on and the gages will go almost all the way over and then back down and the lights turn off after a second.

I know when starting the car the lights are supposed to come on for a little bit just to show you that they are working and then go off, but why would this happen when I'm already driving?

And before this problem, when I started my car the gauges never went all the way over and then back down. I was wandering about this too. Its like I have a loose connection but the gauges have never done this when starting the car till this whole problem came up.

When this happens, during driving and after this problem is over the gauges read like they are supposed to. if I'm moving the speed goes back to normal and the rpms read fine but the tripometer resets to zero.

Gauge sweep and trip odo reset on startup can happen on the '99 cars when the battery voltage is low. GM issued a TSP on it to replace the gauge cluster but a good battery makes it go away. I'd start with checking the battery connections and have it load tested. Since it's happening while driving too could be something else, bad cable, loose ground...I'd check for battery/cable issues first just to eliminate it as the problem.

The battery is new and the cables are good. Where do I check the ground and connections at? under the dash?

Mine does this too. In my case I know is because of low voltage battery. It happens when the car sits for about a week without being used. If I use it more frequently it goes away.

I tightened up my battery terminals and it hasn't happened in a couple days. The weird thing is that they weren't loose... i just made them a little more snug.

A good battery makes all the differences, my car was doing that for awhile. It was on the stock battery, and guess what, it was 99. Put a new battery in it and it went away.
