Lt1 trans Has Clutch fork Different input shaft, different front plate, different bell housing
Yes a lt1 trans can be adapted to work with a ls1, you have to change the input shaft front plate and bell housing.

This is my first post here and I am definately a "still wet behind the ears" newbie as I am a recent convert from the 5 liter camp. Fell in love with the LSX after I bought my 2003 silverado. Then I discovered the hybrids and conversion section here. Holy Crap!!! LSX Fox bodies. Sacralidge at its finest...
I am currently collecting parts for an LQ4/T-56 single turbo swap into an 84' T-Top Capri RS that has been converted to 87-93 GT spec trim. Love the T-Tops, bulged fenders, and emmissions exemption after Jan 1, 2009. Project would be further along if I didn't have to spend so much time restoring the clapped out rusty car I traded my mig welder for. Now of course I need a welder...
The point is I can find LT1 T-56's for very cheap $400-600 all day long, but cannot find the 1998-2002 T-56 any where in my area. If I find one the asking price is like $1300.00 or more.
Since I am poor, recently divorced, and on welfare, lol, this is not feasable for me. I did find a LS1 Vette T-56 for $900 but since it is rear mounted with a torque tube I didn't think it could be adapted for conventional use. Can it?
Please help me make sure I understand what to do when using an LT1 T-56
1. Input shaft needs changed- Any suggestions on where best/cheapest place to get this? Should I go stock replacement or get an up graded piece? Looking at prob 500-550 hp motor.
2. Bell Housing-Stock replacement or should I spring for a HD race unit like one from McLeod. I know they cost so I will have to save up my welfare checks. I would like to take the car to the Friday night grudge matches here in ATL. Hoping for low 11's to high 10's. Not sure what the scatter shield rules are for that time range.
3. Front Plate-I am not even sure what that is? Anyone?
4. Push type to Pull type- Will the front plate and input shaft convert tranny to correct way for LSX motor? Do both trans use hydraulic clutch?
5. Clutch/Fly wheel- Are they interchangeable between LT-1 and LSX?
6. Does the low buy in price for LT1 T-56 make it a good budget trans or will I end up spending the $1300.00 to make it work in the anyway?
Thanks for everybody's help.

LT1s were a Borg Warner unit.
Somewhere around 2000, they went to Tremec units, Which, IMO arent NEARLY as slick as the BG ones.
I had an 02' with the M6 and absoutly HATED the Tremec. If you are FAST on a stick, the Tremec will hang you up quite often.
I have an A4 car now, and like it much more than the M6.
Given a choice, id take a BG M6 anyday over the Tremec ones.

I want to say that the BG units are thought to be the superior of the 2. I know that the BG units I have driven have felt MUCH better than the Tremec ones.
For one year, I think it was 93, there was a BG unit that had a much steeper 1st gear than the usual 2.66 that we all know. IIRC, it was only avalible on 93' cars that came with 2.73 rear gears. That would be a sweet tranny to have against an LS1
