Default Bottle Exploded

Well was in the house yesterday when I heard a loud explosion. Ran out side to see nitrous coming out of the back of my car.

The pressure relief blew on my botle. It was about 80deg out side.

Do you guys leave your bottles in your car?

It was a fresh filled bottle. I am thinking that they over filled the bottle. I weighed my other bottle that they filled the same day and it was 27 Lbs. The bottle said that is should weigh 24 lb 12 oz filled.

Shoudl I let some out ?

Was the pressure relief bad?

Buy a new burst disc as yours is done. Also get a bottle blanket to help keep it cooler and in the shade. Also make sure your heater isn't stying on.

Sounds like they did overfill it.

I noticed just adding an extra pound will make the pressure come up much faster.
2 extra pounds make the pressure come up FAST.

Let some out of your other bottle !

Sounds like they overfilled it and once it got a tad bit warm the pressure crept up and popped the burst disc. Another possibility could be if the pressure disc fitting was over torqued or tampered with.

Any bottles we have laying around the shop that are filled are strapped to the wall just incase a disc ruptures. haha trust me when I tell you that you don't want to play rodeo with a loose bottle that popped the rupture disc.

Wow, this thread was a let down.....there is a big difference in a burst disc letting go and a bottle exploding.

Just keep it out of a hot car and/or direct sunlight next time lol.

I saw a picture of a trans am where a bottle actually exploded and it seriously looked like someone set off a bomb inside the car..the damage to the car was very serious...luckily noone was in it..it would of killed anyone in the car easily.

Yea it has to be an overfill, as long as burst disc was good, because 80° equals about 1000psi. The burst disc will not pop anywhere near that pressure and IIRC they are set to go at about 3000psi. If it was me, I would take both bottles back with your scale and show the filler that he over filled your bottles which cause one to rupture the disc, a refund is in order.

Wow.

I weigh my bottles before and after on the shops scale that fills my bottles. They don't like to overfill, but will overfill by 1/2 # only if requested. It helps more when it's cooler weather, but I don't overfill in the summer.

When your bottle is over filled you loose expansion area. There is a designed fill point in all bottles. The fuller the bottle the fast the pressure will rise. 80' day, sitting in a car or just in direct sun light will greatly increase the bottle going up and up on pressure. Black bottle white bottel it will all plays a roll. IF your other bottle is over filled, drain some OUT.
