Default Edelbrock ProFlow XT+Plate= Booom!!

Hey guys...
I've got a 08 LS2 thats transplanted in my 95 chevy truck. Been running this combo for a year now. Basically consist of a stock bottom end down to the rod bolts. Reluctor wheel was swapped to a 24x wheel so I could use the 411 Pcm. Ported 799 heads, 232/242 595/610 114+4 cam, PRC dual gold springs, TBSS intake, 42lb injectors and all the normal bolt on stuff. A/F NA is 13.0 and on the juice is 12.0. The nitrous kit is from Nitrous Outlet with all the bells and whistles. Been running a wet 150shot on the 90mm plate. Well after this last cam swap I have been turning the motor to 7k with a noticable nose dive at 6300rpms. So I made the swap to the Edelbrock Proflow intake. We got it tuned in and running good NA. Lost a little bit of low end torque but it picked up in the midrange and pulled awesome to 7k. After trying to tune in the N20 we immediately started having back firing issues. I was previously running my window switch on at 2600rpms and off at 7200rpms. Not once did I ever have a backfire with the TBSS intake. Different story with the Edelbrock. So we increased the WS to 4600rpms and off at 7200. Thought I had it worked out to prevent any more backfires, I was wrong there. The Edelbrock was the worst mistake I've made in a long time. Apparently the intake design is NO good for a wet shot from a plate kit. Just no way to make sure the N20/fuel is distrubted evenly. #6 took the whole shot. I assumed that the intake was compatable because of a pic of one at SEMA with a plate kit on it. Talked to Edelbrock and there has been NO TESTING of Nitrous on this intake, yet they have it installed for everyone to see. Just trying to warn everyone if you are wanting to spray on this intake do not use a wet kit. I tried calling them and getting a few answers and I got blew off. I guess they just sold another intake....Oh and the truck was driven 45 miles after the explosion and it was burning oil pretty good.

Here is the pic at SEMA

Here are some pics of it installed in the truck!!!

Here are some pic of the damage it did within 2 days of being installed

that sucks man, but on the bright side now you have a reason to build a stoker forged motor.

Wow. That sucks. Ditch the plate and go with a fogger setup on the new motor.

What did you think the initial cause of the backfiring was?

Basically it boils down to the short runners don't give the mixture enough time to atomize. So it results in a rich condition on top of the piston call Ring Lifting.. It puddles on top of the piston and seeps down between the 1st and 2nd ring then BOOOM. The whole shot to one cylinder.

Nothing to do with the kit or the intake.
Thats learning the hard way that your tune up isnt right.

You burned it up then it backfired.

What was the jetting, pressure, timing?

I have to disagree, this is the best tune that has been in the truck. The NA tune is 26* timing and 13.0 A/F. The nitrous tune was 19* and 12.0 A/F. Like I said before Ive been running this setup for close to a year now and no issues. I swap a intake on and retune and I start getting backfires out the butt. This was the fifth one that took it out. 62N and 33F and bottle pressure was 1000psi on a full bottle. All the tuning runs have been logged and monitored. I have a wideband that stays in the truck at all times.

the design kind of looks like a beck sheetmetal intake in a way and people run a plate kit with those all the time...is it possible maybe there was a problem before the initial 1-4 backfires?

Those plugs tell me your tune up was not even close. Regardless of what your WB says.

Check your springs we had a issue 2 years ago .... weak spring = boom.

All the Becks i've ever seen have been Direct Port. The motorr was driven 45miles after the backfire with oil burning and getting sprayed in the intake. So yeah the plugs are gunna look like that. I was basically showing what the #4 and #6 plugs look like with the electrodes burned off.

When it burned the tips off it melted the pistons and let the oil in.
Bad tunes burn plugs not intakes.

How do you explain no damage anywhere else. No detonation. Looks to me like #6 took the whole 150 shot. Everyone is so quick to blame a tune all the time. The tune was the best its ever been. The truck was running 11.30s at 126mph with a stock shortblock LS2 and a 150shot.. Kinda hard to get those numbers out of a 4500lb truck with a fat tune. It hasn't been back to the track in a few months but its been running with cars that run 10.7xs and 10.8xs.

I remember hearing someting about Lt1's having similar issues years ago with wet plates. Maybe Im mistaken...

Sorry dud but that happened due to a bad tune. oil got in and burned it up. then when it ate the head it backfired threw the intake. the valves will have aluminum all ove them keeping them from sealing

If the best tune you have burns plugs and pistons its not good.

Ok explain to me what A/F and timing would have caused this destruction...low 10s maybe..high 9s... Let me also add that this happened when the truck was running 45mph at 4600rmps. Also explain to me how a bolt on LS2 with a stock bottom end dynos 450rwhp with a bad tune. And also dynos 565rwhp on a 125 shot with a bad tune. I'm all ears, please explain.

You are reading an average A/F.
#6 was probably 15:1 and some other was 10:1 giving you your average and a blown up motor.

Thats why we tell everyone they have to read the plugs.

Bad tune killed the motor not the intake.

So I guess I would need to buy 7 more Wideband kits and install them in each primary. But then again you can't tune each cylinder anyways. So isn't the average the norm.
