Default big nitrous tuneups/how to dial in

im about to hit the dyno

the basics...
346 decent bottom end
afrs outa the box (cometics and stock sized studs)
ported fast 90/90
custom hardlined nxl fogger
harris stand alone

im starting with a 24/28 in it and pressure at 1000/7 i think was what i was told...id eventuall like to hit it with 300 or more if it would keep from spitting out the head gaskets, i dont think the bottom end will give

concerns
how to start? im guesing excellent tuneup on motor, then take timing down to about 8-10...then make a regular pull? half pull? high rpm pull? low?

plugs, i was goana start with 9's i like ngks but they are the same number listed above for 8's and 9's...or should i start with a 10?

We should be a good race. Very similar combos

I have 8's in mine with 16 degrees of timing and a 250 shot. Every car is different, so you're just gonna have to play with the timing/fuel as you go. Make pulls based on what the a/f is doing.

NO !

Make changes based on what the plugs show.

So you have a 28n 24f tune up? Should be around 5-5.5psi for fuel pressure.
Good starting point it will probably need to go to 28n 22f check plugs to make sure.

Well of course, after a pull! I mean if you are making a pull on the dyno and the a/f is close then go ahead and make a full pull..... Then check the plugs

People run at least mid 8's with a 80e, so i'm pretty sure that will not be limiting you on anything

Id be more in the 12.0-12.5 range and the bigger the shot the closer to the 12.5. but we don;t like to use A/f we look at the plugs. and the dyno is almost useless for plug readings it will not load the car in 2 seconds like it does for 9 at the track.

^^^Definitely keep that in mind.....you may get the tuneup "right" on the dyno, but it likely won't be at the track. It's tough to get a good read on the plugs on a quick dyno pull.

If I were you I'd start off with a 24N and 20F @ 5.5psi flowing through a .073 jet. I'd say some NGK 8's will be fine at that level, you don't want to run too cold of a plug because it won't read as accurate. 10-12 degrees is a safe starting point if you have good fuel in it (112 or better)
Buy LOTS of plugs, the plug needs to be new if you are going to try to read it. It would take forever to tell you exactly what to look for and what to do to change the look of the plug for the better. There are some good write up's on YB, just do a search.

Remember, when you lean it out pull a little timing too. You can always add some back in if it needs it.

You are not going to get an accurate tune up on a dyno. Your engine is not under the same load as it will be on the road. You really need to do this at the track.

Also, don't even look at the ****** wide band. It don't mean **** when you are spraying. Your plugs are your best window to see what is happening inside the chamber.

Different people will tell you different things. I like to see it nice and clean with a very light greyish ring. Like someone drew it on with a pencil.

If you see specs, depending on what color they are it could be signs of detonation or oil getting in the chamber. Either one is not good LOL.

AFR means nothing until you get a clean plug then you know what the combo wants. I have a decent combo running 150 mph+ in the 1/4 and I have seen my afr ratio in the 13's and never burnt a plug or piston in this combo

damn this is gettin complicated...who wants to come help me...id like to see somebody who knows what they are doing so i learn the right way and know what im doing for sure after this...i understand all of this to an extent but i can tell this takes a lot of time and some special knowledge...should i even hit the bottle on the dyno or just do some test hits at the track?

i plan to drive the car a lot so its on 93 in the tank same station all the time and 114 in the stand alone...i know its bad to mix and pump is un reliable at best...but its kinda my only option...and i dont wanna do bigger injectors...i could still do e85 though but is it any more reliable? if so i guess i can get a drum of it here at the house....

i have a catch can for the oil problem...detonation is a big concern...i need these headgaskets to hold on

I've sprayed my 24/20 tuneup a bunch with 93 in the main tank and 112 in the standalone. Used ngk -8 plugs gapped at .025". I won't up the tune without 112 in both tanks though. Once the plugs cleaned up my afr ended up in the mid 12's and running 17* timing.

I am going to be working my way up to this once I get my car running. I am a little tenative because of the lack of local nitrous people. I have no experience, but I plan on starting small and working my way up from there. I plan on making hits on a 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, (I have about a million jets my kit came with) etc... with the logger in the car. Pulling plugs and checking them out. There are some good plug reading threads on YB. I've gone over them a couple times myself and plan to continue doing so to help it all sink in.
