Default If you race pls help me...

ND suggested to me that I post this here even though it's technically not a nitrous question...lots of you guys race and will know the answer, so i'll try...
i'm new to slick tire measurements...but I'm on a 12 bolt 4.10 gear now with an 4L60E (shift kit added). Do you run out of gear with a 26" tire in the 1/4 mile?

I know someone who is running a 12 bolt, 4.10s, and a 28" with a 4L60E and he doesn't run out of gear. but I know your question was with a 26", so I can't answer that for you.

See I was pretty sure with 26s he would run out of gear.Im pretty sure he needs 28s but I though someone could verify it for me.

I ran 4.10s and a 26in hoosier slick and it put me right at 6000 at the traps. I now have 28x10.5x15 ET Drags, still with the 4.10s, and am going to be spraying a 100 whp shot next saturday. On motor, you will be okay. Spray...no, you will shift into 4th.

I think it would help you to get some formulas designed to calculate MPH at a given RPM based on variables such as Tire diameter, final drive ratio, transmission gear ratio and engine RPM.

This will let you compare the differences between various options you are considering. Also a big advantage taller tires have is more sidewall flex which makes for a better contact patch and better 60 foot times.

With the 4.10 gears and the trans in 4th on a 26 inch tire you will be doing about 113 MPH at 6000 RPM or about 128 MPH at 6800 RPM.

If you take the same example and change to a 28" tall tire you get 122 MPH at 6000 RPM.

Some of your decision will depend on how far up the RPM band you believe your engine can carry the car in 4th gear. With Nitrous that might be all the way to the redline.

If we go back to the above example again and use the same 28" tall tire you are going to be doing about 138 MPH at 6800 RPM. Now you can see why cablebandit said you would be ok up to about 140 MPH.

My math teacher always told me that someday I would have a use for this stuff.

Let me make a correction. When I said 4th gear I was thinking you were running a manual trans... DUH!!! Your post clearly states you are using an A4, my mistake.

However I made the calculations based on a transmission gear ratio of 1-to-1 so everywhere I said 4th gear change that to 3rd gear. What all of this tells you is that you will probably be able to run the 1/4 with the 28" tires and never leave 3rd gear. If it were me that is what I would do because when you start using slicks you can get better times due the the better launch of the taller tire.

All of this assumes you have room for a 28" tall tire within your wheel wells. Not being an F-Body guy I don't know what will fit your Z.
Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Thanks to everyone...math is def your friend!! I will be searching for more info. Thanks for reading between the lines...i'm trying to figure whether 26"or 28" is better for my application.

I believe I'll get 15" wheels, grind calipers if necessary, and start with 26" tires - this thread tells me i'll be going to 28" soon. Most of what I do right now is at an 1/8 mile where I do LOTS of 60' practice...I do the website so I get all the free T&T I need so I go through rubber fast. Thansk for refocusing on tires when you came for nitrous!! Thanks Dave. I'll talk with you monday!
