Here's the official press release.

FOR RELEASE: 2006-08-10

Auto Buyers Have Spoken: GM Will Build An All-New Chevrolet Camaro

Next generation of classic sport coupe goes into production in late 2008, on sale in 2009; will be almost identical to wildly popular concept unveiled at NAIAS

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Dear sports car fans: General Motors heard you loud and clear.

GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced today that GM will build an all-new version of the Chevrolet Camaro sport coupe based on the award-winning concept that stole the spotlight at the North American International Auto Show and has ignited the passion of car enthusiasts around the world ever since – even spurring consumers to start petition drives and send in certified checks in hopes of placing early deposits.

“The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the Camaro Concept continues to remind me of the uniquely iconic place our products can have in customers’ hearts,” Wagoner said. “Camaro is much more than a car; it symbolizes America's spirit and its love affair with the automobile.”

The all-new Camaro will begin with early production versions at the end of 2008 and will go on sale in the first quarter of 2009. “The new Camaro will be almost identical to the concept, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the 1969 model, considered by many to be the best design of the car’s first generation,” said Ed Welburn, GM's global vice president of design, who owns a 1969 Camaro SS. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sport coupe will feature an independent rear suspension, and will be offered in a variety of models with the choice of manual and automatic transmissions and V-6 and V-8 engines.

Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper said the new Camaro will appeal to both men and women, and unite customers with fond memories of previous Camaros with those who first experienced a Camaro when the concept was unveiled in January.

“We intend to make the all-new Camaro relevant to younger buyers while retaining its appeal to current fans,” said Peper. “The beauty of the best Camaros is that they have always been beautiful to look at with performance that rivals expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new-car buyers.”

In fact, the Camaro Concept design team embodies the universal appeal that Chevy envisions for the car: The core team reporting to the lead designer ranges in age from 27-35 and came from all over the world, yet they all had similar experiences growing up with a love for the Camaro and American performance cars. Their concept redefines the Camaro for both existing and new generations of fans in a contemporary way with responsive performance and modern technology.

Peper said Camaro will complement Chevy’s already-popular portfolio of performance vehicles led by Corvette and including its broad SS lineup.

An American icon
The Camaro has touched many lives – and graced many garages – with nearly 4.8 million produced between 1967 and 2002. More than 1,000 Camaro clubs exist globally, and thousands of Camaro web sites pay homage to the sports coupe. A recent report on America Online’s Top Searches of 2005 placed Camaro in the Top 10 car searches for the year.

On sale in '09? '09 or '10 model year? Hopefully they do it well. I do have some doubts on the final production car...

On sale late '08 as an '09 model.

Supposedly it will be nearly identical to the concept.

Guarentee the interior won't be. It will be very GM inside...

I'm sorry I get so excited thinking they are gonna make a great car then they always get cheap inside.

Time will tell...

I think getting one of these will be my goal... it's either one of these or a C6, so we'll see. Either way, it's great they're bringing it back so we even have the opportunity of getting a new Camaro...

To be honest, I'd much rather see a Dana 44 or other strong staight axle rear in there. You know GM will wuss out on putting a stout IRS in that thing with any kind of gear selection. They'll put some POS weak IRS with no gear selection at all,,, probably some converted rearend from an Australian minivan or something lame like that. GM is notorious for taking a concept car with potential greatness and cutting it down until it's half of what the concept car was.

Although I think it's great that GM is bringing back the fbody, I for one, am not holding my breath waiting for this great, superb, awesome all around package with a decent price tag. Here's my take, It'll either be:

1. A very nice car with good power, decent handling, good interior and "ok" rearend but it's about $6k overpriced. You know, basically a GTO with a different body.

or

2. It will be so stripped down and chinsy, with flimbsy cheap looking plastic interior that fits like parking a bike in a airplane hanger, cheap POS rearend prone to breaking when you go to pass a GEO, but hey,,, it hit it's price point target.

Excellent observation. Continue to propagate the myth so deeply imbedded in the American psyche by the domestic manufacturers' foreign competitors. Visit a GM dealership in the area and have a close look at the new GMT-900's or most any other new platform released in the last year and a half. GM works on a 3-4 year cycle developing new vehicles. We are just now seeing the fruits of Lutz's efforts.

I'll take my cheaply optioned 09' Camaro priced reasonably and enjoy it. It's not like anyone one of us won't begin removing and replacing any and every part because that's what we do anyway whether it breaks first or not. For 95% of the buyers of any new Camaro the car will hold up just fine without breaking. For the 5% or less of us that will hammer the car, breaking and replacing parts is part of the game no matter how stout you think your driveline is. I'm grateful to have the single most important option available again. CAMARO!!

You should read this thread:
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=453914

Pay particular attention to the posts by guionM and Fbodfather.

I think it will make more sense why the F-bodies ended up being a pretty cheaply built car... and shed some light on why the 2009 Camaro probably will be a very refreshing departure from that. Now that they can focus on 1 car instead of 2, they can put the money into making a more solid car.

I'm expecting it to be a car with badass looks... gobs of horsepower, and the build quality, ride, and comfort of my GTO.

The GTO wasn't really overpriced for what you got... it's an extremely misunderstood, and underrated car.

I expect the Camaro to be just as incredible of a value as the C6 Z06 is.

LOL,,, hardly a myth. Just look at GM's past with regard to the Fbody. And there is a reason people think they way they do about american car manufactures, it's because the quality just hasn't been there for so long, people stop looking at them to purchase. It's no MYTH at all lol...

Great! You buy your Camaro and it'll sell really good for the first year or two. Why? Becuase it's been gone for a couple years so the racers and such have to catch up. Plus the HP junkies who only look at hp numbers will snag some up too. After the first year or two the sales numbers will plummet. Why? Because the youth of today, which is their target market BTW, is used to buying Asian/European quality fit and finish. Domestic cars IMO (the GTO is the exception) are just not there yet,,,,, sorry.

I really wasn't intending to "bash" on the new Camaro. I still think it's great that GM is bringing it back and the overall outside design looks solid. I just know GM and I've seen how they take a great idea and ruin it with the bean counters who know NOTHING about how to make a niche' vehicle sell to the public with strong numbers. Ditch that POS IRS rearend. It's not going to do anything but jack up the build costs to point where the target market won't buy it (ehem,,, GTO),,, at least not for the long term.....

I'll say it again that I, for one, am not holding my breath waiting for the hyped up car that everyone seems to be expecting. But, I'm glad they are building it none the less.

Mike

LOL Mikey I disagree, I think over the last 5 years especially that GM has gotten MUCH better and Asian and german cars are getting less quality. I think this is apparent in say comparing an G35 and C6 or a Toyota coralla and a cobolt.

In fact I would make an arguement that the GTO has a less quality interior compared to alot of the newer GM vehicles. The GTO does look killer but can feel a little cheap overall, while I had a Malibu base car as a loan a car when the bimmer was in the shop and the interior was as good if not better than the Toyota Solara they gave me last time.

Plus have you ever noted how quickly the Japanese interiors become dated? Sit in a rx7 or 300zx, 240sx, integra, DSM and they look old, I think the interior of a 93 firebird while not great still holds its own today.

We'll see what you think when you drive mine when I get it

I will agree that this is still a worry, you put a bad *** motor, brakes, tranny and price it cheap it may sale cars but it does not leave alot for anything else on the car. So we'll see....

Although I agree GM has gotten waaaay better, especially the interiors, they still have quite a ways to go IMO. As for Asian/Euro cars getting worse,,,, ? Sat in my cousins 05' 3 series bimmer a month ago and it aint no GM inside. The new Passats are pretty damn sick too, better than the new Grand Prix's I'd say in overall quality feel, fit/finish etc.. ?

Are we talking about the same GTO?

I drive one every day, and it has the best interior of any GM car I've driven in the last 10 years...

OOOOOKKKKKK really read what I said, I said COMPARED to new GM vehicals. IMO the GTO interior is not as high of quality as some of the other new and by new I mean 2006 cars that I have sat in and drove. I do think the GTO interior is VERY nice, and makes an F-body or C5 interior look cheap. The Tahoe, C6, CTS (or any caddy IMHO) etc are nicer than the GTO.

Again this is just opinions I wasn't trying to put down anyone's cars I drive an old *** camaro who am I to judge.

And yes Mr Evyl, I would agree the GTO interior is nicer than any other interior from 2003 back THIRTY-FIVE years not 10 by GM. Changed " my "crappy" to less quality... crappy was too strong a word. damn internet

Those cars SHOULD be better, considering that they cost $10K+ more than a GTO. Any Cadillac should have a better interior than any other GM car. That's kinda like saying a Mercedes has a nicer interior than a Chrysler. It SHOULD.

I'll put it this way... if the 2009 Camaro's interior is anywhere near as good as the GTO, I'll consider it a job well done.
