Well I am looking for a 351 shortblock to throw in my boat. A lot easier than rebuilding from scratch if I'm not throwing good parts in it. Would also consider a built 302. Heads interchange, right?

I think heads depend on whether it's a 351W or 351C but I think most of them are the windsors.

If you use a 302, then you will need a 302 intake, because a 351W has a 1" taller deck. The 351W intake is wider. Also keep in mind, if using a 302 (shorter deck) will mean your headers will be lower, in case you already have tight clearences.

No offense taken. They gave up interchangability for Horsepower!
Kidding aside, it drives us Ford guys nuts that Ford makes things so complicated. Sometimes I feel like I need a dang database just to keep things straight.

I guess I can always talk to my nephew hes got a 351 & I think its a Cleveland I dont know if it works or if he is even going to sell it but I can always ask him.

Heck I know he had his 73 mustang up for sale once

I have to say that the LSx motors is one of the best things GM is doing right now! While some of their cars ain't too appealing to me anymore the interchangability of the LSx motors is great! I do appreaciate your knowledge! So here is another ?... How can I easily identify wether I have a 9.5 or 9.48 deck heigth 351? A guy on SN is selling a 418 stroker kit and it is kinda tempting! So I shouldn't have a problem just using my marine balancer and flywheel on the stroker crank, should I?

The side of the block will have a casting number. Ford numbered all engine components begining with an alpha character. For example, if you have a 1969 block, the casting number will begin with 'C9'. The letter "C" is for the decade 1960's and the number nine is the year. If you have a 1970 block, it will begin with 'D0' The "D" is for the 1970's decade and zero for 1970 and so on... This numbering system is used on Ford blocks, cylinder heads, rods, etc.

1969 and 1970 blocks have the 9.48" deck height while 1971 and up have the 9.5" deck.

Flywheel and balancer would fit, but I would NOT trust the balancing to be the same. My experience with strokers is that some take some effort to balance them. Especially Scat stroker cranks.

Thanks! I know it is an E block. I pulled the rods/pistons last night and everything looks great so I'm gonna have someone check the block for a crack.

lol OK I just talked to my nephew he is keeping his 351W but he does have a 302 w/c4auto tranny for sale lol $500 lol

LOL He changed his mind $300 will take it & the tranny. Needs parts for dads new vette (72 vette lol)

Well I got a running 351 today for $80! Had to pill it but the guy was pulling the tranny so he already had the bellhousing bolts, converter bolts, and exhaust off. Not too bad. Now I'll just swap oil pans, water pumps, and intakes and drop it in the boat to get threw the rest of the season.
