Default Stripped retainer nut

So after some diagnosis, I came to the conclusion that my turn signal module was broken. I read online how to replace this, bought the module, went to work. I got to the retainer nut (nut that actually holds the steering wheel to the shaft) and went to remove it. I turned, and turned, and turned.......went nowhere. I'm not sure if it's the bolt in the shaft, or the actual nut. But I'm stuck here.
What would you guys recommend I do from this point. I could maybe cut the nut off (hope it's the nut that's stripped and not the bolt) and just replace it when I put the wheel back on.
If it's the bolt that's stripped, I maybe could rethread it (if I can get the tool in there) and use another nut.

I'm kind of frustrated here because I hate driving around with no turn signals. Any and all opinions would be helpful.
Thanks in advance guys!
