Flat Black - Help!

Flat Black - Help!
Hey guys,
I think I'm picking up a 3rd gen soon, and I'll most likely be painting it flat black. I have some questions.. and this thread got me going:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/paint-bod...you-think.html
When you paint with a single stage flat black, do you need to sand the car to bare metal, primer it, lay the flat black, and then use some type of clear coat? I would think that the clear coat would make it shiny though? Then I'm guessing you can't sand the flat black afterwards since you can't polish it, right?
Any advice would be great. Thanks!

The best thing to do is repair and prep the existing finish. It is easier. No, yo can not polish flat paint finishes, they get shiny. There are several single stage matte blacks out there that have the uv protectant in them that you want to have if it is going to stay this color for a while. There are also some clears that have matte additives that can be added to them. That will add to the cost though, but will be more durable.

Alright gotcha. So it sounds like I would be finishing body work on the existing paint of the car, then I'd end up sanding the whole car just to smooth it out and have somewhere for the flat black to stick to, and then just spray over the whole car. After spraying the car, that's it, I'm done? The UV Protectant would take place of the clear coat right?
Thanks man!

^^Yes, thats the paint you want otherwise it'll look grayish black like raw primer.
I'm actually getting my WS6 painted like this at the end of the year. The body shop by my work quoted me $600 done for a entire job with door/hatch seals done as well. It's a very basic paint system. I was gonna do it myself but for $600 I'm not gonna waste my time.

I painted my old C3 Corvette satin black with the SEM kit. Turned out really well...the satin is a nice finish. Has a nice sheen to it. No, you don't do anything to polish it. There's a lot of discussion as to what exactly you can do for protectant...I used Zaino Z5 on it and it did not shine up at all. If you use a conventional style wax, it will.

I painted parts of my GSXR matte black...
i used paint called "blitz black" from john deere, it's a 1 stage flat black that doesn't require clearcoat. I'm sure some of these guys in here have heard of it. I did some research and alot of hot rodders use it, it is great against weather and elements, it's made for tractors afterall.. It comes in pints, or rattle cans.
PS. i used the rattle cans, and just sanded the plastic and sprayed. it came out good, but i didn't have alot of surface area to cover, or else i would have used a spray gun.

they use the stuff on the john deere tractors so it's pretty tough stuff, those things see nothing but sun and other crap.
