clear coat
Ok so I got the base coat on, started with the clear PPG product. Then my gun started just spitting out droplets of clear, I thought it might melt in but dried to the worst orange peel ever. Using HVLP gun with 8 to 10 psi. gun was clean never used for primer, like WTH happened.. Sanding off clear, started to cut thru base coat. Can I just touch up base {spray of course] and get it to blend. I didn't use this gun for the base. HELP

So some basic questions.
What brand of gun are you using?
What size is your air compressor?
Are you running and in line dryer or a dryer at the gun?
What needle size are you using for base?
What needle size are you using for clear?
Do you have a regulator at the gun?
What kind of cup are you using?
Do you have a screen in your gun?
Are you screening your base clear before and after mixing and when putting in the cup?
I can tell you more with this info.

Don't know brand of gun bought at local paint supplier, claim they never had a problem not expensive but not cheap $100.area... compressor 220 volt 165 lb air capable set reg. at 100 lb no dryer inline, drain tank daily. hvlp gravity feed cup on top.. water seperator at gun as well as air reg. there's screen in gun, yes strain at the cup. tip size 1.4 thanks

Think I have more than one issue, I think pressure gauge at gun is reading wrong, thus too low air pressure, also water seperator was used once before maybe not doing it's job. Forgot to mention this was my 2nd job using hvlp, 1st one went fairly well. I think I hate these hvlp guns. With my old Devilbiss gun I never had a problem, but now I can't get rubber parts for it and had to pitch it.

I think my gun is the problem, $100 piece of crap. I dug out an old Eclypse siphon gun I used for primer and cutting in years ago and cleaned it till it looked like brand new and used it. Got a pretty darn decent job out of it.. I hate hvlp guns

I think youll need a 2.0 for high solids clear
I use a Mattson.
If you use one youll change your mind about HVLP.
With this gun you can regulate the pot pressure to "push"the liquid up to the tip.
Its the best of both worlds, like having a pressure pot and low pressure delivery.
Plus you can change the body of gun and use it for both clear and basecoat
without ever putting the gun down.

thanks for the info topless I've heard of the Mattson gun but aren't they pretty pricey. Hey Fireball I tried raising the pressure and It didn't help, it just spit bigger and farther. I asked my paint supplier about reducing the clear and he said they usually don't recomend reducing very much. I guess the lesson here is you get what you pay for, In my case a lot of extra work. thanks for the reply guys.
