Default Fixing flaking clear coat w/ Perfectmatch base & 2k clear

I have a black 2000 TA with a section of failing clear coat on the trunk, but it hasn't gone past the base. It may fail again, but I'm going to try spot treating this small area first before I take the wing off and repaint the entire trunk lid.

Keep in mind I'm using rattle cans. I know, I know, but I don't have a gun and I'm on a bit of a budget. I know how to prep the area, but my question is around laying a thin base layer before the new clear.

I've attached the cans I'm looking to use for this. My plan was to use Duplicolor Perfect Match for the black base. Then I have a 2k clear coat I was going to finish up with. A friend of mine said the Duplicolor is not a single stage paint so it will not work with 2k clear. I don't know a lot of about paint, but does this sound right? Can I use the cans below together without obvious problems?

Thanks again.

If you absolutely have to rattle can it, at least go with a good quality paint. Check out automotivetouchup.com. They sell a decent quality paint in an aerosol can, both base and clear. My buddy has used it on two of his vehicles so far and it produced a nice finish and has held up well.

If it's just the clear that's peeling, then just prep the area & use the 2k clear.

Agreed, maybe lightly wet sand the area and tape everything off good. 2-3 wet coats of clear. if the clear runs because its cold out just wet sand after it dries and cut, buff, polish the whole area to blend the clear in.

My fear was sanding into the base without applying more. I'll try wet sanding with 600 or 800 grit to smooth out the flaking clear and just use the 2k clear afterwards w/out the base. I'll reply once I get this done to show final results.

Thanks for the advice!

Personally I'd save up for a hatch respray. We all enjoy the DIY aspect, but sometimes it isn't worth the hassle.

That clear failure will continue to grow and annoy you. Find a decent shop or a friend.

I'd say that's $200-$300 paint job. Cheaper if you prep, i.e.-remove the spoiler, and sand. Dupli-color will not hold up to the Florida sun and heat even with that 2k clear.

Good luck to ya!

Yeah, hopefully it's a medium range solution until I get the entire car painted one day. Luckily I keep it garaged at home and have a parking garage at work. Not too much sun typically.

When I sanded the flaking clear it went past the existing base and into the primer a bit. I sprayed the base last Saturday so I'm giving it at least a week, maybe longer, to air out before I apply the clear. I'll post up some pictures once I get it all taken care of.

should be able to take it to a shop and have them re-clear it for a couple hundred bucks if you take it off yourself

Not trying to high jack your thread but I'm dealing with a similar problem. My clear is peeling from my side mirrors and Ive been thinking about it myself.

Could you guys please give me a run down on how I should proceed. Its only the clear that's coming up, the paint looks to be fine. How should I prep the mirrors for a coating of clear.

Thanks for the help.

Never tried them yet, but the 2 part spraymax cans posted in 1 st post would be good for small stuff like mirrors. They are a little over 20 bucks a can & you have about a day to use after activating them. You should be able to use over lacquer touchup This would also be good for sanding & reclearing headlights.
