Default One Step Paint

My dad works at a local factory that makes automotive refinishing products that are high quality. I had them paint my car with their new euro clear and it is so hard that it has to be sanded before buffing. One of their new products is a tinted clearcoat that they make in many different colors. I just picked up an ls6 intake and stripped sanded and they painted it in "porsche red". Has anyone else heard of these types of one step paints?
I will post up picks if someone gives me an idea of how to do it.

Are you saying the base color coat and the top clear coat are combined into one? Any clears I've worked with all had to be sanded prior to buffing.

Yes the base and clear are one. I took it to have it buffed out and it had to be extensively wetsanded before it could be buffed. I'm not much of a paint guy but I had sent it too a reputable local bodyshop to buff it out and they couldn't believe how hard it was to sand and buff. My car isn't show worthy or anything but I don't mind them giving me good deals on materials.lol

The company is rubber-seal teknol industries and they have a medallion series. They specialize in clearcoats and all refinishing materials but I don't know what exactly it is call it looks better than many paints. They are suppliers for custom shops and body shops so they aren't some factory paint supplier they make high grade stuff and sell internationally. Their chemist keeps coming up with crazy stuff.

So how is your "one step paint" different from an industry standard single stage like Dupont Nason?

Nason doesn't 'require' a clearcoat over it, but can be clearcoated over. It's not the best paint out there by far... which makes me ask the question. Nason does use an isocyanate hardener. Is this paint isocyanate based?

You are most likely talking about an acrylic enamel, and from what you have described a "hardner" consisting of polyisocynates and solvents to give it the durability you are refering to has been mixed in as well. Acrylic enamel is used ever so often in the body shop world for a couple reasons. You can kill two birds with one stone by being able to spray your base and clear at the same time so to speak and some paint systems, the acrylic enamel is often a closer match than a base coat clear coat.

Acrylic enamel is considered single stage cause it does not need a clear coat over it. It can also be sprayed without the use of hardners unlike a urethane clear coat that relies on a hardner or "activator" to start the drying procedure. While acrylic enamel has its uses, their is no substitute to a base coat clear coat in overall gloss and durability.

the auto industry has always had single or two stage paint. Single inst as shiny and fades quicker but its cheaper. Two stage protects ways longer and doesn't fade nearly as quick. its also glossier looking and easier to fix from what i understand. In high school me and my best friend went to the junk yard and bought a pair of matching 88 fiero gt's. At the end of the year it was time to paint them. I bought single stage torredo red metallic. He bought stock gm two satge light blue metallic. I was blown away over his fnish compared to mine. I wanted 2-stage but they didnt manufacture that certain color in it and i was dead-set on it. That year he graduated and i had my senior year up next. I took the same class and refinished it in a different 2-stage red and it was way easier to paint and looked so much more professional. For Two gallons of the single it was roughly $350. For two gallons of 2-stage it was a little over $500. Not much more for so much more quality. But my experience ends there. Dont know if it help or not just thought id throw in my .02 cents
