What are you trying to accomplish with sanding? If the clear's peeling off the base, not much you can do except repaint it all. Which would mean you'd need to remove all of the existing clear (since it's delaminating) and paint over it from there.

the last camaro i fixed this problem on i wasnt able to save the base layer by just feathering the clear down so i had to strip it. In which case id start with 80grit, then then 2-3 coats of primer.

80 Grit?

I think that might be a bit extreme if all you want to do is feather back the clear. Which wont be there because it peeling away. Like Camaroholic said, you have to repaint it.

He said he stripped it with 80 grit, which is still excessive. Why would you strip an entire panel and put deep scratches in it, forcing more unnecessary work on yourself? He could have just saved himself time and money and wetsanded with 320 or 400 and reshot the base then clear, or in some situations just re-clear.

if its delaming u want to remove all the problemed material. Now i stripped the entire panel because just trying to feather back the clear wasnt working, it was creating *** holes. Now when the customer comes to pick up his car i dont want it looking like a wash board do i? Also if u are goin to primer what does it mater which grit i use?

and if it makes u feel better, when i did it i didnt use 80 grit i used 40grit on a grinder. Not factoring dry times i had the hood prepped from base clear in maybe 30minutes and i know it was going to look how it needed.

Well you said you weren't able to save the base, I had no idea what you meant unless you specified.

If you're going to prime it why take the risk of warping it using 40 and a grinder?

time is money, and it wont warp if u know what u are doing

When u are expected to fix like 5-8 cars a day, u have to take some shortcuts here and there

i would sand it down and feather it all out with 220, then put 3 good coats of primer, then wet sand it down with 400 to 600 then paint it from there
