There is a seller on eBay that has whole sets of brand new GM OEM gen IV 5.3 pistons with rings for about $100/set. There is another seller with whole sets of gen IV rods you can "offer" down to $150 per set, same BNIB OEM GM. Also plenty of sets of used rods there pretty cheap. But my point was really the pistons. The GM rings are obviously very good and aftermarket rings of decent quality will likely cost you half of the piston purchase price.
Good luck with your hunt.

Once an OEM moves on and starts producing other stuff or retires a part number, some stuff can get real cheap. Often resellers pick this stuff up at auction or similar for almost nothing. I can't vouch for every seller but the 4" bore pistons I just picked up look like champs and have the part number etched right in and the proper skirt coating as well. I am going to weigh them compared to true stock LS2 pistons this weekend to make sure but for the price of aluminum and shipping, I just can't see a Chinese-esque knock-off being worth a mfg's time.

I have a set in the short block (2009 iron block with pitted cam from failed AFM lifter) still. Planning to take them out tomorrow to check their condition. Will let you know then.
