Default Closed loop without O2 ready?

The last time I drove my car (about a month and a half ago) I noticed it was running a little rough at part-throttle. The SES came on for a few minutes, then went off. I grabbed the laptop and fired up Datamaster, and saw the SES was for the left O2 sensor. I cleared the SES and went for a drive and datalogged it. I saw that the O2 sensors never were "ready" but I went into closed loop mode anyway. Car still ran a bit rough, but the SES didn't come back on. I'm going to replace the left O2 in the spring, but I was just curious if that's normal to go into closed loop even when the O2's aren't ready?
