Default PCM / tune & dealer-warrany strategy

OK, OK, so I'm an EFI newbie.
I got a new Colorado 5.3, and I'm looking to get the most out of it. I figure a tune would be in order. It is an everyday driver, so I don't want to get too crazy with it.

I don't need any crap from the dealer if and when I need to take it in for warranty work. Sooo, should I get a NEW PCM with a tune, and keep the original PCM for a trip to the dealer if and when I bust something? Is it a major chore to swap a PCM out?

Or a better solution? (I'd rather NOT take it to someone for a tune.)

That's what I did when I was more like stock and
using the Predator; bought a second PCM, had
dealership do an in-car flash to right VIN and so
on, and I've been running on the replacement
ever since (stock is still stock, in a box).

Swapping is easy, just pull the battery + wire
first.

Someone like "wait4me" could provide you a PCM
with the mail order tune good-to-go.

You need to see if that is possible to swap without having security issues on that vehicle, the f-cars are very flexible for transfering pcms between vehicles. Others once you sync a new one, you end up with the old one running the vehicle, but not security matched. I know on my GTO, you need to have a dealer resync the new pcm in vehicle with a tech 2 in passthrough mode to make it work.

This is one great reason to use a custom tunable handheld tuner, so you can always flash back to stock But my opinion on this is very biased.

Slow, Thanks for the information. OK, another factor/option to consider.
