Default Rough idle

My car has a very hard time idling and I'm not sure why. Its a 2001 ls1 with a 98 cam in it with LT and an slp loudmouth. When I used a Snap On scanner and looked at my data I noticed that my ignition timing at idle was jumping around anywhere from 14* to 21*. Is this normal? This is a fresh motor with less than 300 miles if that helps. Thanks

Timing will jump if the motor rpm and manifold pressure is moving around.

Your timing is probably adjusting trying to keep the car idle rpm steady.

Was the car tuned after the cam install?

No I have just a factory 01 m6 tune. I am thinking I have a leak in the bottom of my intake manifold, so I'm gonna check that out tomorrow.

Ironically, vacuum leaks usually make cam cars run better....to a point.

If you have a scan tool, you can log STerms/LTerms. If they are maxed at idle, but come down immediately when you step on the gas it is indicative of a vacuum leak.

Is this the first time running the car after the cam install?

you cant just install a cam and expect the car to run like stock

its going to starve for idle, its going to pop, fart, **** etc...

long story short, get a tune and it will run the way it should.
