Evaporative emission control system - vent control circuit malfunction....
From the Haynes manual.....
1) System is designed to trap and store fuel that evaporates from the TB and fuel tank to keep it from venting to the atmosphere, which contributes to HC(hydrocarbon)emissions.
2) System consists of a charcoal-filled canister w/lines running to/from the canister. These lines include a vent line from the gas tank and TB, an EVAP pressure control valve, EVAP pressure control solenoid(electronic), a charcoal canister and the manifold. There is also a purge solenoid valve in the canister.
The ECM/PCM controls the vacum to the purge solenoid valve w/an electrically operated solenoid. The gas cap is also an integral part of the system. An indication that the system is not operating properly is a stong fuel odor.
To check:
1) Check all lines to/from canister for kinks/bends/leaks and breaks along their entire lengths.
2) Check the gasket in the gas cap....check to insure gas cap is fully seated.
3) Use a hand held vacum pump and apply approx. 15 in-Hg to the control vacum tube located on the pressure control valve. After about 10 seconds there should be about 5in-Hg vacum remaining. If vacum leaks down faster/more than specified amount....replace valve.
Good luck.......
