Default evap leak problem

Been having a intermediate small evap leak code. normally get it around a quarter tank of gas. cleaned the valve up at the intake. smoked the system and had smoke coming from the top of the tank. Not sure what could be causing this. Also worried about if this is hurting performance. I replace the cap when it first occured and it solved nothing. Anyone have ideas?
