The best scanner for the money is EFI live, in my opinion. And if you later want to upgrade to a tuner, you can.

Check out our VCM Scanner only at www.hptuners.com which now has generic obd2 scanning in addition to the enhanced scanning of all the vehicles that we support with the editor.

May not sound like much but if your wifes hyundai throws a code its always nice to just be able to hook up and scan it

Dang. I'd better throw mine away then, since I can't use it....You can buy it straight from autotap.com or find a used one in the For Sale section like I did. It is possible that vendors don't sell it b/c they sell something different, IDK.
I don't recommend it as a tuning scanner, but I have used it on the following makes of vehicles: Toyota, Saturn, Ford, Pontiac, Honda, and should work on all OBDII-compliant vehicles. I have used it to debug overall injector issues, O2 sensors, etc. using the generic OBDII parameters. I also have the enhanced parameters for Ford and GM vehicles, which have many more vehicle-specific parameters.
IDK if your vehicle outputs individual cylinder misfire or injector data. If it does not, no scanner will be able to read the data. IMHO, that is the set of questions you should be asking.

If you plan on eventually tuning invest in either EFI live or HPtuners you can upgrade. I have efi live its a awesome scan tool i also have autotap its ok for general auto repairs though i hazve used it for tuning when i didnt have anything else. The other option ive used and its pretty cheap laptop based and does body and air bag is pcmscan i use it when i tune using tunercat obd2 stuff non-sponsor information removed

Anyhow...

I have autotap and its pretty useful. Many parameters aren't available though for most cars. So if you want to see individual cylinder misfires on your car in real time, won't happen. However, if you get the GM/Ford/Chrysler enhanced parameters, you can pretty much see everything that you could with a manufacturer specific scan tool, including misfires on each cylinder, knock retard, ect.

The EFI LIVE scanner is the best software scanner bar none for these engines. Plus for the most part if your just logging day to day you can view the data on the LCD screen of the V2. HPTuners sure as hell can't do that.
