Did it ever work? Is the cable new? Do you have any logging software you could use to verify the cable is good?

Could be a dirty/poor connection. If you have a usb cable, try another port in your laptop, or another usb cable. I have both usb & 9 pin serial cables, and have had cable and connection failures with both kinds. Likely you have a problem with a cable or connection problem between your pc and the module in the cable.

Where did you get the cable? Can you verify that you have power on your OBD port?

Try using a powered hub, I had trouble with my external drive, because my notebook didn't supply enough power from the USB to power it, using a powered hub fixed the issue

What is the voltage on the car when it is happening? A small car charger might help.

Also, maybe changing the port settings in your control panel to allow faster transfers might do it? I think most of the time, the ports are set to 8600 or something really slow. move it up to 112k or 56k..

You might want to register on the Monodax forum, for TC support, you'll find a lot of the guys from here that use it, over there
