Scan Tool Question - Controlling Emissions - P403
Hi Folks,
Do most scan tools have the ability to test the EGR?
I have been reading the EFILive site...in particular, the DVT section of the Scan Tool. The PCM in my '96 Impala is reporting an error code P403, which is an EGR sensor error. To diagnose, I want to cycle the EGR and check voltages.
The image linked above shows control of the EGR in the bottom-left corner. I am just guessing...would this allow me to cycle the EGR with the key on and engine off?
Thanks! BTW, been considering buying EFILive for years.

Yes most scan tools have bidirectional controls to control pcm outputs. The LT1 is a vacuum EGR valve controled by a solenoid. Check the link for EGR testing http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_EGR.html

Thanks, Flame. That's good info. I have a reader, which also clears codes. But, it has no control capabilities.
Any recommendation on the least expensive scan tool that allows bidirectional control?

Yeah, I hear ya. That's probably what I will do for a quick test. I really like the capabilities of EFILive. Have to save my money, though. Thanks for the tips.
