Default What year truck computer to use?

Hello everyone,

I am building a 69 Chevelle with a stroked 6.0 and twin 76mm turbos. The time has come to buy the computer and harness. I wanted to use a truck computer, harness and coils since they are easier to find in a junkyard. The crank I bought has a 24 tooth reluctor wheel and I will be running up to 25psi. What year truck is best to use and when did they switch to a 58 tooth design so I don't buy the wrong one. I know the 4th gen F-body computers you want a 99 to 02 because the 98 didn't have as many tunable features. Want to make sure I don't get a crappy year for a truck if they made them

Thanks for any help.

Gary

What trans, and what style of throttle, I think are two
big questions driving that choice. Beyond that, I'd look
at the availability of 2- or 3-bar OSes by donor vehicle
type from your preferred tuning tool vendor.

I like the HD vans because they were the last to give
up on cable throttle, but they are also not so popular
for hopping up so you may not see so much custom-OS
coverage. However I am familiar with one '04 truck that
we swapped an '03 Savana PCM into and use a 2-bar OS.
Whether there's a 3-bar, I couldn't tell you.

Trans will be a TH-400 so no issues there, and the throttle body will be cable operated.

I had a thread saved somewhere that gave the part number of a 3-bar map with a GM part#. I hope I can find it. Maybe I can post that question on the forced induction section.

Part numbers for the 3 bar are in the FI stickies. But damn 25 PSi where are you plan on going in this thing?

Awesome, thank you.

I plan to cruise around on E85 and 15 or 16 pounds of boost but there are some fast cars out here that are tubbed and hook like hell.....I might need the extra mph to catch them on the big end.

Just be sure that the donor PCM has the custom OS
needed for 3-bar operation, available. 3-bar sensor
is necessary, but not sufficient.

How would I find that information out?

Or any 99-2002 truck...GM put the same PCM's in the trucks and F-Bodies...there ARE drive by wire trucks in that year range, but the hardware can be flashed with drive by cable code. The 2001-2002 PCM PN is 12200411, that hardware has a number of operating system options, including many 3-bar speed density options, drive by cable or drive by wire (with proper cruise control if you choose to go drive by wire...which can be an issue with certain 2003+ PCM's...as can AC if you want it in your car).

There ARE sometimes reasons go go with a newer PCM on a 24x engine, but for 99% of the swappers, and in my opinion the original poster is included in that 99%, the 12200411 PCM is the way to go. I'd also suggest running a 12212156 operating system in it from a drive by CABLE vehicle...(that OS is found in both drive by wire and drive by cable 2002 vehicles). With some work you can make a drive by wire flash cable throttle compatible, but it's so easy to just flash a 2002 F-Body base OS right into the PCM, then enhance it to 3-bar SD, that it's not really worth the hassle.

Thank you for all the information everyone. Can I flash the PCM with HP tuners myself? Maybe just download a flash file and overwrite it? Does HP tuners have a flash file bank like LS1 edit used to? Can I just install the PCM in the vehicle and power it up to flash it first and do I need both licenses for the PCM's original vehicle AND an 01 to 02 F-body? Sorry for all the questions, I have never used HP before, only LS1 edit.
