Backfiring help!

Backfiring help! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My LS1 powered Caprice has been sitting parked for the winter since September, prior to being put away the car ran fine. So I figured I'd pull it out for the holiday. Put a fresh battery in and the car started right up but but while idling it starts to backfire here and there. So I let it sit and idle for 20 mins or so then took it for drive, it hesitates at take off and then once it gets going the backfiring continues to come and go. Any ideas as to what this could be? A mechanic friend told me it could be the pcm trying to relearn the tune since the battery had been drained of power. Sorry for the long post guys, and Merry Christmas to all the members here!
