Default Aftermarket ECU

I am just about done building my TT motor, and looking at ECUs. I see there are a lot of options, and I know this has probably been answered, but having no experience with stand alones; what are the benefits of running say the XFI, Dominator, etc. Over the stock unit and EBC. I know a lot of units have boost control built in, but they don't seem as flexible as a dedicated boost controller.

By the way this site is extremely useful, it has been a tremendous resource during this project.

I really like BS3.......they offer a boost controller built in, but most prefer to go with one of the ams units. The FAST systems work well, but their processor isnt good enough to run effective traction control systems along with some of the other features(not enough space).

Data logging with the BS3 is less problematic as well

Thanks. Seems like boost control on most units is fairly basic, and bs3 gets expensive when adding everything. I see they have two E85 sensors, which is the more cost effective route to go. Do the other ECUs have provisions for flex fuel?

haltech has full closed loop boost control and boost per gear etc, works very well, flex fuel will be out shortly too,

only downfall is they only have 6 ignition outputs, so to run full sequential ignition you need to run a M&W ignition box with a special firmware in the ecu.

Seems like you have to rebuild your entire ignition system. It doesn't seem as if GM coils work with the ignition. I'm trying to understand the benefits over a stock ECM. These seem like a real pain unless you are building an all out race car. I know they all have wideband and individual cylinder tuning, but couldn't you just use MAF instead of the O2?

If its a street car I prefer to use a stock PCM and just run a custom operating system for boost. Its cheaper and works just fine.

There is a MegaSquirt 3, it has a lot of Boost Controller features.
- Boost vs Speed
- Boost vs Gear
- Boost Table switching
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms3/Boost_Control.html

Also the MS's have much better PC software, making it easier to tune if you want it to run everything. But you could just install it as a Boost controller and leave most up to the Stock ECU.
