Default replacing 2000 firebird ecm(with HP tuners)

I have a RX7 that is swapped with a 2000 firebird ecm and harness and we are 99% sure the ecu is bad. It is tuned with HP tuners. My question is can I take the ecu that I have on the shelf that was out of a truck(lq4/4l80e), plug it in, burn a couple HP tuners credits, delete vats etc, copy the tune over, and run it? I was told that I would have to have a dealer flash it to a 2000 firebird and go from there but that seems like an unnecessary step.

The hardware numbers on the ecu match. The car has a MVB trans so no ecu control of the trans.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can do it, I have done it several times.
Ask the dealer how much they charge to flash it to a 2000 Firebird OS, it may be cheaper to do it with HPT.
Find a stock OS and burn 4 credits to flash, then copy over your current tune to the new PCM

So I cant just use the ECU as it is? I have to flash it to a 2000 fbody first?

it might actually be cheaper to do to the dealer than use 2-4 credits. they only charged me 77 bucks to flash mine back to stock. though it sounds like youre in a slightly different situation.

yeah, i was told that i can have the dealer flash it back to stock for $70 and then ill have to use two credits on it to tune it. I just dont understand why it cant be tuned the way it is, why does it have to be flashed to a fbody first?

The car will start and drive as it is, but some things won't work, like the fuel gauge, speedo and a few other. Some of that things you can fix them with tuning, but other things can't and they won't work

Is better to flash it to a 2000 Fbody OS

Take a look at the f-body wiring diagram vs the truck wiring diagram and see if all of the pinouts to the ECM are exactly the same. If there are differences then you either need to re-pin the ECM or re-flash the OS.
