Default VIN & Mileage in the PCM for OBD-II Cars ?

I have heard "rumors" that it is possible to get a different VIN programmed into the computer . . . Anyone know more about that ?

Hypothetical situation :

( 1 ) A "roller" is purchased, without a computer or instrument cluster in the vehicle.

( 2 ) A brand new computer is purchased from GM ( or another source ) and installed.

( 3 ) A brand new instrument cluster is purchased and installed.

How can the VIN & vehicle mileage be entered into the computer under those circumstances ?

The computer is a "clean slate" . . . The odometer has never been installed before.

Thoughts ?

Thanks !

Vin can be programed to pcm ,no mileage in it but some new ecms do have mileage.
Dealer sells rebuilt clusters and they want a core they program mileage to match the old one. Dealer will not put themselves in the middle of any potential mileage fraud.

The vehicle I am asking about would be a 1999-2002 F-Body . . . Does it's ECM store vehicle mileage ?

If the instrument cluster were missing, and had to e replaced, it would be impossible to program accurate mileage into the system, right ?

What happens in that case ?

I know that titles have the "odometer disclaimer", if mileage is known to be inaccurate.

Thanks !

Most people would get a used cluster from the wreckers and drive on. A lot of newer vehicles the mileage is stored in multiple modules.

98-02 f-body.
milage stays with the cluster only..
not the ecm..
you could car fax it .or ask the your dealer for a VIS.
that would give you a start to telling what the milage would be.
the dealer can program the vin into a clean slate ecm...

the dealer can not program te milage into the cluster

As stated, Dealers themselves won't adjust mileage on your cluster. In Michigan, there is one place called SPECMO enterprises that does basically all the work for at least GM dealers.

They can program any mileage into the cluster but they require your old cluster so they can match mileage (fraud avoidance). I'm not sure what they would do if you bought a car without a cluster. Best best is to get a used one.

Thanks for the info, guys . . .

This would be a real PITA if the car was low mileage and the only clusters available were from high mileage cars !
