Default pcm question on gear change

I am about to have my 2.73 dif swapped for a 3.42. I know I need to change the option on the pcm for the gear change. Is this just for the speedo or will the car not run right until I have this done?

Also, this car has Frost tune and runs great. Can I have someone w/ hp tuners change the ratio option only w/o messing w/ the tune or do I need to send the brain back to Frost? Thanks. Brian.

Personal experience, I just changed mine from a 3:42 to a 4:10 and other than the speedometer being really off it shifts into all gears before you get to hardly rolling.

Speed input will, as Blevins mentioned, screw w/ the trans shifting.
As for the change[s].. As long as it's not a COS, nor it being locked, HPT can do the changes. Credits are involved.

Thank you both, now I know I need to get it reprogrammed immediately. A guy from a local car club 40 miles from where I live (never met him) has hp tuners & offered to help me. Is this easy or can he mess up the tune and I should send it to frost?? What does credits are involved mean please?

Should be as easy as inputting - Tire size and new gear ratio. (I've done it with my M6, A4's may may be different but I do not know.) What transmission does he have and has he done it to his car? Shouldn't mess up the tune if your just correcting tire size and gear ratio. Credits are involved to license your PCM to his interface. 2 ($49 for 1 credit) required to write calibration.

Aaaaa, now I got it. Fifty dollars is the same price as Frost will charge me (+ shipping) so it makes sense for me to send it. Does it make a difference weather I flash the pcm before or after the swap? My mechanic of choice is 50 miles away. Can I baby it for the 50 miles one way w/o hurting anything? Thank you for making this clear for me.

It shouldn't make a difference. Frost is great, if you have any major concerns I'd shoot him an e-mail. With that being said, if all your having done is your gear ratio changed then you should only see a difference in the speedo. Since you're an automatic they may change shift points/firmness/pressures etc.. Whatever they think may be best for that gear ratio. If that is done, it may drive like **** until the actual gears are swapped, but I don't see it being bad enough where you couldn't drive it to the shop. Maybe someone with more A4 experience will chime in, or ask Frost.
