Default Torque limits?

Been trying to find the answer to this question without much luck.

In EFILive, and I believe HP Tuners as well, there is a setting that allows you to adjust the "Max allowed Engine Torque" using values from -640 to +640. There is another table where you can apply the same settings for each individual transmission gear. This is a Gen III engine/PCM, btw.

What exactly does this DO? Is it an actual LIMIT on the torque that the PCM will react unkindly to if exceeded? In other words, if my engine puts out 700 ft.lbs of torque, does the PCM pull timing or cut fuel thinking something has gone bonkers?

Or is this just something that traction control uses for some arcane purpose and really isn't actually a LIMIT to what the engine CAN legitimately produce at all?

Here's a thread about it: http://forum.efilive.com/showthread....orque-limiting

I don't think there was any conclusion from that thread, other than obviously it is possible to make more than 640 ft-lbs.

Yes, I know. I started that thread there and have not received a satisfactory answer from anyone, even EFILive's staff.

Which is why I thought I would try here for an answer.
