timing? ls1
what timing are you guys & gals running? i believe i asked my tuner what timing i had & he said 28 degrees. i read a mag article that said factory timing was 32 and if you bumped it up 6-8 degrees you could gain upto 25 more hp? any thoughts? cheers everybody!

Stocking timing differs from autos to 6sp. However neither had 28 from factory. 28 is the norm on a bolt-on stock head car. When you get better heads and such sometimes you can get away with less timing. Main thing to remember is not to chase a timing number however give the car what it wants to make power.

the article i have is from hot rod jan 2006 "ls1 cookbook", pg 107 says according to comp, gm runs only 32 degrees of timing , they think another 6-8 degrees of lead might be worth 25hp. that always bothered me thinking i left something on the table. cheers! n thx 4 clearing that up.

That seems like a very dangerous article that aligns itself with the misconception that more timing=more power. Definitely not true in the LSx world. In an LS1, running the 38-40* advance they suggest would put a rod through your block in no time. Not sure any ls setup would need that much.

That table is somewhat detuned in the mid range. Guess GM didn't want it knocking on the Corvette's door. You can run a fair bit more timing in the 2000-3600 rpm range and pick up mid range torque. From 4400-up it's about right assuming good fuel.

if the fuel is right then from 1800 rpm to MBT which is around 4600 rpm u can run about 27 degrees of timing, and maybe 29 right before MBT then drop it to about 24-25 degrees, then pick up the timing at around 5600 rpmto 28ish. Thats on a bolt on ls1, if the heads are milled or if the engine can breathe better, the air injection will increase (g/cyl) and have to reduce timing in a row or two down.

The stock high octane table for 2000 has 29 deg. at 3200 rpm for the whole upper half of the cyl. air range, and 29 deg is the peak wot timing across the rpm range. The stock low octane table value at 3200 is 19 deg. If knock is detected I believe the high and low values are averaged somehow.
