Default car will not run with MAF unplugged.

I'm helping a friend tune his VE table but the car will not run with the MAF unplugged. Is this simply because the VE table is so far off or am I overlooking something? It will barely idle and the LTFT's are at around 20-25 at idle. Its a 2001 LS1 using HPtuners.
Its been awhile since I have done any tuning but I dont remember having this problem in SD mode.

any suggestions

Does it throw a MAF DTC...?

If it does then the VE table is wrong.

If it does not then it is still trying to use the MAF.

VE is way off if you get LTFTs that high. Tune that better and it will run without the MAF as long as it's throwing the MAF codes.

Is the MAF 5 or 3 wire? If 5 the IAT is built into the MAF and would explain why. If it's that far off multiply the entire VE table by 20%????? It's what I would do then I would tune part throttle and see where my upper tables would be at but I'd have it a bit richer before going ***** out WOT tuning.

You can force SD without unplugging the MAF, right?

Yup, just fail it in the tune itself and bye bye MAF.

High trims can also be from false trimming and they
can compound a rich error (like, say, a low end of VE
table that still looks stock while he tossed a lumpy-
*** narrow separation cam in there). MAF is not as
easily fooled and may be contributing to not-totally-
bogus airflow readings when in the picture.

I know on my car I can't select 3 for the MAF codes as the car won't run so I have to use option 2.

You have to check with a scantool that a MAF DTC shows up immediately at startup...

without the MAF DTC, the PCM is still attempting to use the MAF.

Set them to 2 not 1 and google, "hptuners VE tuning PDF" click first result.
