Default HP Tuners

Is HP Tuners really worth the money it cost? Or is it better to get a mail tune?

They probably use HPTuners with your mail order tune.

Its up to you if you wanna take the time to learn/research how to tune with HPTuners and know your vehicle is running exactly how you want it.

mail order tune is 70% of what the engine can do.
physically datalogging and making the changes yourself over a period of a few weeks in all sorts of different driveing habits and styles will tune your engine to 100%.
you make the choice.

I have a bone stock 2013 silverado with 5.3l. I would like to get into learning the tuning for myself. Plan is that when I'm ready to do my mods I will have some experience with the tuner already. Is HP Tuner rookie/newbie friendly?

100% No. If you really want to learn to tune, you're going to have to do a lot of studying, and most likely have to take some classes.
