Default what exactly is a standalone harness?

Sorry if wrong location.
Anyway, I've heard several people talk about standalone harnesses but I've never heard anyone actually go into ANY detail at all (even with all my googling). What's the difference between a factory LS harness and a standalone harness?

stand alone harness just has the basics need to run the engine. a gm car/truck wiring harness as pollution controls and other functions like cruise control, fuel management etc in it. not needed to retro fit in street cat/hot rod unless smog state.

That's pretty much what I had expected. Going that route, would I still get to keep my power steering?

Unless you have electric power steering, it has nothing to do with it.

If you don't have a harness or an ECU already, you should consider the Holley HP system.

https://holley.com/products/ls_power/ls_efi_systems/

Pick the system that matches your crank (24 or 58 tooth) and rock on. It might be a little more money up front, but you get a wideband, easy hook up, and the ability to tune the engine without having to buy HP Tuners or EFI live.
