Is this a bad CMS or CKS?
So my car:
2001 WS6
Cam, headers, dumped exhaust
~90,000 miles
Problems:
takes several cranks to start
intermittent sputtering/popping that seems to improve at higher RPM
Problem is worse under load (AC on, up hill, etc)
My thoughts are that this is either the CMS, CKS, or a fuel pump issue. Anything I can do to narrow this down?

I have had the cam sensor completely disconnected. Only problem was hard starting and back firing about 1/2 of the time. Once started, it ran perfectly.
Sounds like you might be running very lean due to low fuel pressure.

For what it's worth, here's how she drove today:
Started on the 2nd crank, Idle is fine (always is), minimal (if any) sputtering while it's warming up, Once warm i get a range from 1-2 pops to 3-5 seconds of sputtering while driving at low RPM (between 1,000 and 1,500) that is almost never a problem over about 1500 to 2000 rpm.
Is there a way to verify that the fuel pump is the problem? I would prefer not to cut a window in the trunk and dropping the tank is going to be a huge pain in the ***.
