Default Help! P0420

California 2000 Formula ws6 @ 107K STOCK

The car has been having this code since i bought it @ 85k miles. When i bought the car i took it to get it smogged..i passed emissions but failed because the SES came on this makes no sense to me how the car is up to standards but because of the light it fails. This was almost three years ago and now i have to smog again but i know it wont pass b/c of this code. I've done research and found that it narrows down to either the driver's side cat or the O2 sensors, now i dont have much money to blow for hit and miss. What should i do, just buy the cat from Rockauto or replace the O2's? oh and every smog test is about 45$ pass or fail, ridiculous. I need advice ASAP

420 and 430 codes are almost always the cats. I just looked on Rock Auto and it seems that all the cheaper cats can't be sold in California and the ones that can are $300+. Still cheaper than GM. Find someone that has taken them off when they put headers on and buy one of theirs. . Any drivers side cat from 00-02 will fit. 98-99s won't be a direct bolt in. There were so many failures on the 00-02 F-body cats that GM had to extend the warranty on them to 10 year/120K miles.

I hate California emissions. LOL

Can you tune the codes out or is that allowed in Cali?

Call a metal recycler in your area and see what they are paying for them.

This guy has a pair that might have fewer miles on them.

Only you can decide what they are worth to you vs buying new.

when I was looking I bought mine here on the Forum. It took a couple of months to locate them but if you have some time start looking now in the parts section. Mine have been on the car for years now with no issues. Good luck.
