Default air fuel ratio

I just installed an autometer air/fuel ratio gauge today. gauge works fine. took it for a drive and everything was fine. turned car off for a while then took it out again. the service engine soon light came on. when i installed the gauge i cut the wire going to the PCM rather then splicing into the line. for a brief moment the 02 sensor was not wired into the computer, would that cause it to throw a code?
