Default F.A.S.T. or PCM for LS1?

Hi All,

The LS1 is going into a road-race kit car. Not sure of the final design on the engine yet, but it will likely be a 388. Need to pass SMOG, so will have a reasonable cam, cats (and cutouts ). Have been reading about the F.A.S.T. system, but don't know too much about the stock or ASA-PCM (and cam).

Since only the LS1 is being transplanted, which do you think is better suited to controlling it?

Stock PCM
ASA-PCM
F.A.S.T. System

I am thinking F.A.S.T. for the following reasons:

1. Frequent software updates (soon to have traction control)
2. Flexibility (can be used on just about any motor)
3. Ease of use (software appears logical and intelligent)
4. Cable (doesn't need special VIN cable)?

Cons to F.A.S.T. system:

1. More folks available to program a PCM
2. Cost (PCM and HPTuner/LS1edit is probably cheaper)

Open to all suggestions. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Every pro you listed applies to HP Tuners as well.

My car is a transplant car as well. I have my own custom race harness and PCM. All my factory gauges work and the PCM controls most of my car..

My next powerplant will be LS2 with a custom harness and LS2 PCM.

GM PCM is the most powerful engine management system I have seen that you can use.

Hi Keith, Thanks for the reply. I have just been looking at the HP Tuners web...and please correct me if I am wrong...it looks like the software and cable are keyed together and you can use VCM on two like-vehicles for $5oo. For $150, you get an "Enhanced I/O" cable. It's not clear that a "regular" cable comes with the $5oo package, but I am guessing yes. For 2-bar speed density, add $3oo.

I have to read more about HP Tuners. Thanks for the heads-up. Didn't know about that product. Glad to see someone is competing with LS1edit.

Will your kitcar go thru OBDII testing, ie. will they plug into the car? If so, you might want stock pcm cuz FAST programming changes are made thru the FAST cable which is different.

If you need:
custom harness
pcm
02 sensors
hpt or competitor

I"m guessing $1500 or so?

BS3 might be like $2300 but you might need to customize the harness depending on how you mount stuff.

Jeezzzz, I completely forgot about that. Very good point. I will visit the state SMOG people on Thursday to get the entire scoop. Thanks.

If you have to deal with smog *****, then a factory ECM is really your only option. They will want to plug into the OBDII port and make sure there are no codes.

If its a kit car can you register it as an older car? That way you won't have to deal with the *****.

Normally a kit car is registered by the year of the engine that you are using.
