I use a little cig lighter 70W one from AutoZone.
It appears to have reacted badly to jumpy voltage
in a truck I was logging, and whacked my serial
port. I don't blame the inverter, it has been fine
for over a year in my car. But all of them have a
minimum line limit and if you're flickering around it
watch out. Might be best to first try refreshing
the laptop battery you've got, then try finding a
replacement that holds up.

Depends on the laptop. my 3.2ghz non centrino processor uses a ton of power and it'll overheat a 70 watt in no time. Most won't work on low voltage when the car is off. I've borrowed a friends 300 watt and it works perfect, never overheats or shuts off when the car is off.
