Default Bad Crank Shaft Positioning Sensor?

Here’s my story: The car was running just fine, but at the track last Friday I had just hit 4th gear and it started misfiring and died. It started right back up, it sounded fine, and visually everything was ok. It was driving alright, but would stumble from time to time. I have had problems with the crank shaft positioning sensor in the past with these symptoms, so I jacked it up, unplugged the O2 harness to get it out of the way, then unplugged the crank shaft sensor, visually inspected it, plugged it all back in, fired it up and the car ran fine! Halleluiah, or so I thought. Yesterday, the car begin lightly stumbling again the same way.

Is the sensor itself the culprit? Is there a way to test it? In order to change it I know I have to go through the crank relearn procedure. Is this something a shop will HAVE to do for me?
